Genetics Question

#76592 Posted on 2016-11-22 14:15:36

I don't really understand what results I should expect down the line when I breed...

For example - I have Vash and Cheyenne's Peach. Their genetics are as follows:
Vash: Ee aa gg Crcr dd chch FF zz pp stysty rbrb ++ oo spsp lplp no patterns
Peach: are Aa gg crcr Dd chch FF zz pp stysty rbrb ++ oo spsp lplp no patterns

Does this mean there is a......
50% chance of Ee
25% chance of ee
25% chance of EE (which is a black horse, right?)
50% chance of Aa
50% chance of aa
100% will not be gray
50% chance Crcr (does this just mean it will only lighten the coat?)
50% chance Dd

If I'm right what I don't understand is how this all adds up. When you put all these together, what kind of horse would come out? Like for example I'm assuming you can't have a horse with both EE and Dd? Or EE and Crcr?

Thank you in advance! I've combed the forums and genetics guide and I'm just not getting it!!!

So Vash : Ee aa gg Crcr dd chch FF zz pp stysty rbrb ++ oo spsp lplp patn1patn1 patn2patn2

& Peach : Ee Aa gg crcr Dd chch FF zz pp stysty rbrb ++ oo spsp lplp patn1patn1 patn2patn2

50% Ee
25% ee
25% EE (only black when paired with aa, when paired with A is bay, when paired with At & no A is Brown)
50% Aa
50% aa
no grey
50% Crcr (this will add cream to the horse, Cr + Black is Smoky Black, Cr + Bay is Buckskin, Cr + Brown is Seal Brown Cream, Cr + Chestnut is a Palomino)
50% Dd

You can have a horse that is EE Dd and you can have EE Crcr and even EE Crcr Dd
The easiest way to get the percentages for a specific color is with a genetic calculator like this one

Thank you for your help!!!

This does lead me to another question...more of a strategy question.

My goal is to get the best in both stats and conformation, but obviously I'm going to have to build my lines up over time. Is it better to pair high stat horses with lower stat to bring the overall stats of all the horses up? Or should I match my highest with my highest and then bring in the others as I go?

There are a lot of different strategies for that. Personally I pair based on color and work my booty off to bring the stats up as much as I can during the horse's life hoping for the best.

If you're wanting to breed for conformation someone else will have to help you there; my strategy for conformation works but so slowly as to be exceedingly poor for actual confo breeding.
