Show Entrance Fees...

#76090 Posted on 2016-11-18 13:03:33

I remember before Abbey gave us the great new showing system that the show entry fees were pretty stable and reasonable. Lately though I've noticed that they're all over the place. Novice shows used to be $20/$25 per show. So for 1 horse I'd spend max $250. I was auto-showing last night, had selected "Cheapest" for modifier and some of my Novice horses were costing me $500 or more. Local show fees used to run any where from $20 to $40 ($200 to $400 per horse). I had some Locals costing me $800 or more. In an odd twist, most of my Regional horses only cost me $200.

I have yet to make a profit & a large portion of my horses are placing. I'm spending so much more on show fees that my winnings aren't even close. Has anyone else noticed this or been having the same problem? For those who are making a profit, how are you entering your horses?

(Just for the record - when I create shows the entry fee is always $20 - no matter the grade or specialty.)

I do soonest/cheapest mainly but I show at different times of the day. I've noticed the price jumping around a bit, and I definitely have loss of profit but I put it down to losing a few foundation/second generation herds recently.

My main problem is not enough shows to enter all my horses in a lot of the time. It makes showing very frustrating when I'm having to spend extra time supplementing it with the riding school.

I always run for cheapest shows, but I have also recently noticed a spike in prices. As Maple said though, I also show at different times of the day. I notice nights can be a little more expensive, maybe because the cheaper shows are over? Loss of profit is also something I've tracked in the last 2-3 days for me. I normally gain at least 1k, but lately I've been losing at least that. And, same thing with sometimes there's not enough shows for the higher placed horses.

I've noticed that too. When I see that there are only $30+ shows in a division I try to make more (at $20!), same for divisions with less than 10 shows currently available. But I only have 3 arenas so I'm limited.

I'm forever forgetting to make shows; however I have noticed an increase in the cost of showing (whenever I encounter the more expensive shows I tend to make some cheaper shows but the rest of the time I forget to make any shows at all).

I think that the change in cost has something to do with the new 200 active show limitation per player; players who used to create 400+ shows a day are now limited to ~200 and to keep their income roughly the same they need to double the cost of shows. This is just my hypothesis though, I could be wrong.

I can explain why I'm "guilty as charged" for making shows with fees from $20-100.

It's partly a result of the show cap for deluxe members (only having 200 active shows at any time). I used to make ~500-600 shows a day with $20 entry fees. My net profit was around $20k a day from show entry fees. This made me happy, because this would pay MY show entry fees. I typically had enough shows to show EVERY horse and not have more than 3 of my horses per show. My show winnings would often be between $40k and $80k from showing all my horses. Leading up to the change there was less horses showing for a variety of reasons, a major one being the show bug, so there was some decrease in profit happening but not as much.

At first I was making $20 shows when the new system was implemented. The profits from the shows decreased to under $10k a day. This barely covered half of the expense of entering my own horses into shows. Additionally, my horses are placing less frequently, so I'm experiencing a loss of profit AND a loss of stat gain (that, however, is an entirely different conversation and post I'm sure, haha).

So I've had to change my methods to ensure a daily profit and maximize stat gain. I now charge $50-100 for Regional - National level shows and usually $20 for Novice-Local shows. If you see one of my shows in Novice-Local at $50-100, know that it was likely a sleepy mistake on my end and forgetting to change the show fee price. This gets my daily show fee profits to $20k+/day. I MUCH prefer to show my horses due to significantly better/faster stat gain, but showing every horse isn't turning a profit as readily as before. So the maximize stat gain AND profit I show horses in their top 10% of their level in the most expensive shows, horses that are over the half-way point of their level on whatever setting (depending on the discipline and current number of shows...highest entries/lowest entries/cheapest), and send the rest of the horses to riding school.

I also try to hop on once during the day before I usually do to check if I have any shows available that I can create, and try to fill in wherever there is a lack of shows orthe levels/disciplines I know I can get a show filled rather quickly (R1 dressage, L5-R4 western, sometimes R1-R3 Racing and Endurance). This varies though, as I do sincerely try to make sure I have at least 100 of my shows in levels and disciplines that typically struggle to maintain over 10-20 shows. I will also admit that I tend to ignore anything below L4 across the disciplines (unless there is under 10 shows available) because, to be frank, all my of horses are R1 and above and I also want to make sure my own horses have shows to enter too.

I always make $100 entry shows for everything above Novice level, and only my novice level shows are $25. Its the best way to ensure max returns and I like to make money.

My novice levels are cheaper because I want to do my part in making sure that new players with brand new 3-year-old store horses have affordable shows to enter. I might not be making a difference at all, but that's my reasoning :)

Ditto.

On another note, has anyone ever been able to make more than 130 shows? That's always my limit.

I always create $20 entry fees, also. I just try to have my horses make back at least what I put into showing, but with recent high fees, that hasn't been the case :P

@Elegant When it says you can only create 130 shows, do you also happen to have shows already active under the "your shows" tab?

You can create a maximum number of 200 shows if you have enough arenas to make 200 or more shows. Do you not just have a number of arenas for 130 shows?

Huh, I thought you could make 200 no matter the number of arenas you had. Good to know! I'll make those other arenas, I suppose, since there's been a shortage on shows :)
