Sty; is a color modifier or pattern?

#74541 Posted on 2016-11-04 18:36:23

So being that I mostly work with QHs I have little experience with the sty gene. I believe it is a color modifier and as such if I were to use a marking randomizer on a sty horse it would maintain the the sty gene and get a new marking. Is this true? I'm asking because I'm now working with shetland ponies and want to modify the coats of some horse but not loose the sty gene. I also don't want to use color modifiers on my horses with the sty gene if doing so means I loose the sooty.

Any help would be much appreciated.

It's a modifier. We can't get a sty gene using the marking randomizer, so the marking randomizer won't take it away.

incase you actually wondering what it is, its sooty... so like sooty palomino, sooty dun (which is a colour, so like ducky said, no correlation to markings) etc.

YAY!

Thxs Ducky, I was 80% sure that it was a coat modifier but I didn't want to loose any STY genes accidentally.

@sky thks too, I understand mostly how it works and what it does to the horse; but I wasn't sure if there was a weird EV thing that meant it acted like a marking rather than a coat modifier.
