CURRENT Research
2 parents (duh, lol).
4 grandparents (also duh).
328 half-siblings; 322 by sire, 6 out of dam.
471 aunts; 276 by damsire, 186 by grandsire, 6 out of dam's dam, 3 out of sire's dam.
232 uncles; 168 by damsire, 53 by grandsire, 7 out of sire's dam, 4 out of dam's dam.
5,836 known cousins; 3,040 out of aunts, 2,796 by uncles.

I have this thing about keeping track of my horse's relatives...

It was easy enough to find half-siblings out of his dam. Just a simple JC registration status search using the dam's name and plugging in a random year of birth to see which years she was actively bred and what, if anything, came out of them.

Reno has six half-siblings out of his dam.

Then I was curious about his sire and all the siblings from that side. You can't do the same thing on the JC website for stallions, so I splurged $18 for a full record of his sire's produce. Can I just say wow?

Three hundred and twenty two half-siblings by his sire. Thoroughbreds, man...
(this is impressive to me because there is no AI allowed in purebred TBs)

Now I'm going crazy trying to figure out if and how I can find any photos of these horses. It's a little difficult since many of them were/are Australian-born. With a handful from the US and Canada.

Don't even get me started on finding aunts, uncles, and cousins (down to 1st cousins 2x removed). I've already found some pictures of a few of them...

Yup. State City earned over $1 million in only 17 starts. Apparently, he was a popular stud. Going through, a handful of his foals were unregistered (probably won't ever figure out why), some had cancelled applications, and a few are now deceased. I can't wait to figure out photos of these guys and gals.

i guess i should join the crazy club! i tracked down my pony's pedigree and boy did i have a fun night looking at pictures and records of her relatives! i went wayyyyy back. basically anything related to her, i found records of it. its just so cool to look at their relatives ;u;

//its probably a lot easier to find records when the bloodline is primarily very well know welsh ponies though

Sounds pretty cool keeping track of them :)
322 foals for a good TB sire sounds a lot but I'm guessing most were AI :P Let us know how you get on finding pictures and tracking them!

Tbh I don't reeeeally like RL breeders obsessions with sperm and putting it into any old mare regardless of conformation or welfare of the mare but so long as the horses end up living a good life :) Also transporting semen around is so much better than transporting horses here there everywhere.

The Jockey Club doesn't allow AI. Live cover only. Side note, one of Reno's uncles (Lord Carson, I think... or was it Dublin) actually died of brain damage related to a head injury sustained when he fell dismounting a mare.

So far I've found over 500 678 aunts and uncles as well. I'm only putting the ones with photos in my family gallery and all the other ones are being listed in an excel document so I can look them up later and see if I can find more on them.

you think thoroughbreds are bad, the leading walking horse sire has 2426 foals and is STILL producing at the age of 20.. but all of them are AI so..

At first I was shocked by the number of half siblings from Reno's sire. Then I was like "Oh dont be silly Agapi, most of them are probably AI" then I read that you said they dont allow AI, and now I am just speechless....

I love going back through my horses' pedigrees and finding out all sorts of things. I had a red roan QH {Now passed from old age} and my dad and I went back through his pedigree. We went so far back to the old Arabians and their pics were paintings...lol. He started from Arabs, then went to TB and ended with a QH.

I can trace Reno's pedigree so far back that there aren't even paintings XD Even as far as the handful of foundation Arab, Barb, and Turkoman stallions.

I don't have a horse to do this with, but I've started doing it with my dog xD

siblings are hard to find since they aren't always registered (i've found 1 from his litter of 11), but I've got names and pictures all the way back to great-great-great grandparents.

Looking them up got me interested in color genetics of dogs, and now it's a rabbit hole i can't escape from!

It sure can take up a lot of your time XD

Just when I think I've gotten everybody in a generation, someone on an OTTB group posts their horse's pedigree that belongs in my documents and I notice I haven't gotten them yet -____-
