Breeding for white?

#73257 Posted on 2016-10-24 18:42:40

Hey guys, so I have a quick question for you all.

So I was wondering how to go about breeding for white in mustangs, I do have one mustang that I bought that is white, but want to be able to carry the gene on.

Thanks!

White is a dominant gene, so it will always show if a horse has it. If your current horse has only a single copy (their genotype might list it as W+, unless they also have another white pattern, like tobiano, roan, or sabino), you will have a 50/50 chance of them passing it to their offspring.

White is a fairly easy one to understand.

Basically white is part of the kit gene; which also includes Tobiano, Sabino, and Roan

If you have a WW horse then all the foals from that parent will also be white.

If you have W+, WT, WRn, WSb then the foals have 50% chance of being white when bred to ++, RnRn, SbRn, SbSb, RnT, TSb, or TT.

You have 75% chance of of getting white when you breed W+, WT, WRn, WSb to other W+, WT, WRn, WSb horses.

If none of the parents have a W in their genetics then you won't get a genetically white horse.

Because white is a dominant gene when you have any W then the horse will be white.

this might be helpful if anything I said was confusing

Thank you both!

He is W+ so I guessed that it would be 50/50, thank you for the conformation and the info to what he should be bred to.
