sabino clydesdales?

#66658 Posted on 2016-09-11 07:20:23

How do I breed sabino clydesdales? I can't find any sabinos for sale o stud, is there a way to take non sabinos and slowly breed the gene into them? Like how with flaxen you bred an ff with a FF and get Ff?

I want to reply to this, but am about to lose internet access for the night, so I'm commenting in order to promise to come back with an answer tomorrow, if no one else has covered it!

Hey there!

The sabino gene is a dominant gene with two levels of coverage. In order to get a foal with the gene you need to foals genotype to be either Sbsb (average coverage) or SbSb (maximal coverage). You will need to have at least one parent with the gene to breed the average coverage and both parents need the gene for maximal coverage!

If the parent(s) have only heterozygous (Sbsb) for the trait there is always a chance that the foal won't inherit the gene, but breeding homozygous (SbSb) parent(s) guarantees at least average coverage for the trait.

However you cannot breed two non sabinos to get a foal with sabino as it is a dominant trait and shows up if there is a gene for it. Flaxen is a receive trait, which is opposite.

Hope that helps!

Lady Jane is pretty much spot on.

I'll add a little bit though:
Sabino is one of the markings that is found on the KIT gene, along with tobiano, roan, and white. So a heterozygous (one copy of the gene) sabino should show up as "Sb+" in the genotype. If you see "Sbsb" you should actually report it as a bug, as that's not how the genes should show anymore.
[I don't think Clydesdales come with any other available KIT genes; but in other breeds you can wind up with combinations like TSb (Tobiano-Sabino) or SbRn (Sabino-Roan)]

If you find a SbSb horse, that means it has the homozygous form of Sabino (which as Lady Jane explained, will have the more dramatic coverage) and will also always be guaranteed to pass one copy of the Sb gene to its offspring.
A Sb+ horse will have the less-dramatic coverage of the Sabino marking, and will have a 50/50 chance at passing down either the Sb or the +.
A horse with "++" in the genotype is solid, having none of the KIT genes.

If you have all ++ horses, you can keep an eye out for studs or sales of SbSb/Sb+ horses, to try and introduce the gene. If you breed an SbSb horse to a ++ horse, you will always get a Sb+ foal. If you breed an Sb+ horse to a ++ horse, you'll have a 50% chance of getting an Sb+ foal, and 50% chance of ++. Breeding ++ horses to other ++ horses will never result in a Sabino foal.

You could also try using a marking applicator or a marking randomizer on a solid horse. Those are both items that are available for purchase for credits in the credit shop. The applicator allows you to choose a pattern to add, while the randomizer gives you a random pattern (as long as it's allowable for the breed.) If Sabino is the only marking available for Clydes, then a randomizer will probably give it to you. :)

Reeses Pieces: that is some seriously impressive artwork. Are you a professional artist?

Thanks! But nah, I'm 18 and a future bio and vet student. I've just been making art since I can remember, since my mom is an artist and I always watched her. You can type "Marijose Teran" in google search and her paintings will come up.

I do sell art if someone specifically asks for one of my works or hires me to draw something because they've seen my art before, but I wouldn't consider myself a professional ;)

Oh my God your art is amazing! The detail in her hair in the first one is incredible! I love her so much she's so beautiful inside and out and you captured it so well, I've been basing how I do my hair colour and cuts after her because she's petite and fair like me (except her hair and skin are both absolutely flawless and mine are so flawed haha). I would have replied ages ago if I had realised you'd replied. You're ver talented I art that's for sure.
