Tack - What happens when a horse dies?

If a horse dies from old age or neglect while the horse is tacked up, does the tack automatically get removed from the horse and placed in the member's inventory or does it disappear?

I currently have a reminder to de-tack all horses once their turn 20, but I'm a little paranoid I'll forget to either lock up, de-tack, or somehow lose a horse.

I think you get it back automatically? I went and looked at several deceased horses and none of them were equipped.
