I bought a sketch from someone that I'm thinking of selling sigs of. Whenever I get a piece ready to sell I make a master copy and then create a copy of the master to customize. For this sig, there would be some parts to customize for the person buying, but there are also some parts that would be the same color for each sig. I've done the lines and based the piece in shades of grey. What I'm now wondering is what to do about the parts that will be the same for each sig.

My options are to color those areas on the master copy so when I create the copy to customize those parts are already done or leave the whole master copy grey and recolor those parts for each sig (if any sell).

What would you suggest or do? I'd really love to hear your methods or ideas. Thank you!

(Sorry this is so long. I ramble sometimes....)

Definitely do it on the master. You'll easily be able to recolor it if you want to change the colors later. Just remember to put the color on a new layer! And also make sure that you make separate layers for the 'permanent' colors and the colors that will change for each sig.

I was leaning toward coloring the master copy, but it's really helpful to know you'd do that also. I've remembered to make layers for everything... I'm 99.99% sure. Thank you for you help, Syrien!

You're very welcome! It'll save you a ton of time, which is always something you want to be doing. :) If you're worried about messing up the master, you can always save a new copy of it, color the permanent colors on that one, and then create a new version of that one to recolor. Personally, I wouldn't bother doing that, but it wouldn't take too much extra time or space on your computer to do so.

My process is usually to have only one copy, but to save each recolor to a new file. I'll save both a PSD and a PNG of each file. That way, it'll be easy to make any changes the customer wants with the PSD, and you'll have the PNG to give them. I keep separate folders with all of the PSDs and PNGs so I can find them again if I need them.

That's a great idea! I'll make a copy of the grey scale master as a back up! I haven't done a sig before & have only done a couple of tags so I'm not that experienced yet. I should probably stick with "better safe than sorry".

I'm using paint.net to create any lines I need and then I do the recolors in gimp. I always save a gimp copy & a png copy. I learned the hard way on a practice piece to have 2 copies. I create a folder for each tag and then keep all the copies in the main folder. For this I might make 2 sub folders in the main folder - 1 for gimp copies & 1 for png copies. Thank you for all your advice, Syrien!
