Contemplating breeding new Gypsy genes

#51812 Posted on 2016-07-08 20:46:39

I started breeding only solid Gypsy Vanners a couple of months ago, and I'm thinking about incorporating Rabicano,Roan, Splash, and/or Overo genes while keeping my cream and dun focus. I'm really not keen on Tobiano (boring) or Sabino (too patchy). I feel that while breeding solid Gypsies have been a fun in-game goal, it departs too much from the IRL breed standard.

Any helpful input from fellow Gypsy breeders?

I don't personally mind the tobianos in homozygous form because it's honest to the true RL gypsies C: I color randomized a batch of mine and absolutely adore them. I also have splash and overos now in my herd, which I'm extremely excited about! I'm trying to breed for flaxen as well and just bred a breeding pair of flaxen carriers! Definitely worth it!

Perhaps if there were more than two Tobiano patterns (TT and T+), I'd be more excited about them. Of course, adding even 5 more coat patterns would probably be super expensive to add to the hundreds already out there, so I'm content with pursuing other colors. I forgot to add Flaxen to my list!! I currently don't have any of those anywhere in my herd.

I'm the same way with my Dutch Warmbloods; my favorite Equiverse colors are solid black roan or double roan, but IRL Warmbloods are typically going to be bay or sorrel (chestnut) with a smattering of black and gray. Tobiano and Roan are really uncommon, and likely not accepted in most breed registries. But they're so pretteh.

I'm a big fan of the roan, splash, and Oo genes! It would be lovely to have another breeder. :) (I have about 10 stores sitting on my second account just WAITING to be painted with roan and Oo and Splash. Trying to introduce them so I'm not going crazy with tack at the same time as some of my other horses who are maturing to showing age)

I split mine in to two groups: solids and patterned. I just customized a few new ones a couple of days ago, mostly to focus on red-based coat colors (though I made two smoky cream duns as well, lol - other than that I don't care much for the black based colors on GVs).

I feel you on the sabino. I also wish there were more than 2 tobiano patterns, especially since only the homozygous form is realistic looking.

I have found that throwing together a bunch of genes makes for some interesting looking horses.

This is a frame splash.
This is a tovero rabicano.

Ideally I'd like to get a tovero splash - closest I came was a tobiano splash, though I sold it. But, I also kind of like just plain overo as well.

I'm iffy on roan - for me it depends on the color of the horse. I just sold a smoky cream roan - it looked basically white, lol. I have a solid black roan that I like a lot. I do not like it on bay or bay dilutes. But, that's all down to personal preference. One of these days I'm going to make a custom with ALL THE PATTERNS on it, hahaha.

I am totally drooling over the tovero rabicano and plain overo's face markings. ♥ Gotta get me some overo and tovero into my lines. ♥

With colors, just been experimenting lately, and putting different colors together. I like to be surprised. I rather work with their stats and conformation. That you can control easier than the color in my opinion. :)

I just came back from a 3 month hiatus and am thinking along similar lines with my Gypsy Vanners. A majority of my herd is solid, and I'm still happy with that, but... I'd like to play with some patterns. I wish we had more tobiano patterns, too. And I'm not a fan of sabino for the same reason, too patchy.

I made a Frame Splash Rabicano boy yesterday. I like roan, but mostly on darker colors. It can also look pretty cool when paired with leg markings, like this girl.

Flaxen when paired with leg markings can spruce up a solid, too. Here is one of my examples of that.

Oh man Merridiel, that flaxen is awesome.

Guess I need to get me some credits so I can design some more horses, lol.

I've got a nice herd going. I've got just about all the interesting colors.

Dun, Overo, Frame Splash, Solid, Splash, Flaxen, Moreno, Smokey Cream, Rabicano, Roan, etc.

I particularity love this guy.

I would love to see more breeders with similar colors so I can expand my genetics.

Would anyone be interested in a Gypsy rare color/pattern breeders network?

I'd be willing to start the group. Brainstorming name ideas:

Gypsy Vanner Genetics Counsel
Gypsy Rare Gene Society
Vanner Variety Network

I cheat and use randomisers, my favourite is this girl: Harlem. I aim for browns/creams/duns in my herd. Not so much fussed about markings unless it's overo splash or tovero I don't like those ones much. :c

Yet to get my hands on a moreno and flaxen Gyspy but I've had pretty much every other colour you can get. I'm hoping for more solids/white markings now that the leg marking bug is fixed (hopefully) so I might need to make another custom herd soon. >>

Of course my main priority is stats, colour is just an added bonus. :c

Demure - I'd be interested in that.

maple - that is one awesome looking horse. :D I've got a lot of heterozygous flaxens, and just had two foals born today that I was hoping would be homozygous (ff sire and Ff dams), but no such luck. :P For some reason I thought I had a moreno but then I realized I was thinking about my Trakehners, lol. And they, of course, are invisible, hahaha.
