So I have a friend currently in beauty school and for the past few months I've been volunteering to let her do fun cuts and colors on me so she can practice. My hair has been on quite the journey!
I started with long dark brown hair (box dyed, which I hopefully won't do again cause it's bad!) and my first adventure was testing out the baylage technique with caramel tips.
At the end of February I went back and let her talk me into cutting ALL my hair off! :( (It wasn't actually as bad as I thought, but I still can't wait for it to be long again!) We dyed the top dark dark dark brown, basically black, and lightened the bottom so we could put blue and purple sections in, kind of a peekaboo style.
This hair color and the next one I don't actually have direct pictures of, so I had to take screenshots of videos she made of them (I don't want to post her Instagram)
A few weeks and a lot of purple showers, stains, and towels later, she needed a model for a more difficult technique, so we lifted the blue/purple and a little bit more of the black out in order to do a new color. We did pink for convenience, because all those colors lift out to a weird yellow that pink can cancel out. We used the "circle" method so the bottom circle was a magenta, the middle was pink (it ended up being pink/orange!), and left the top.
Sadly the pink lasted probably two weeks or less, besides the magenta, so I've been living with blonde/yellow hair under my black for a few months. It didn't look THAT bad when I actually put in the effort to do it, but you'll see just how crazy it was. My birthday is on Sunday and for better birthday pictures, I decided to get my hair done.
My goal was creating a fake root that matched my natural hair color so as it grew out, you wouldn't notice and I can get away with little maintenance while I'm not living near her. Then I wanted it to fade into a lighter, ashy brown.
For anyone who doesn't know too much about hair coloring, you can't go from black to blonde in one sitting, especially if your black isn't natural, so I was able to lift the top to a coppery color (think bad ginger box dye) that we went over. That's why it's not a lot lighter than the root, but it will hopefully fade over time, otherwise before I move I might go back in and have her lift the top again to get that lighter color. The bottom was already blonde so it lifted much better!
My hair has been on a heck of an adventure in the past 6 months or so. I would love to hear from anyone else who changes up their hair a lot!

Lol pink does not cancel out yellow (coming from someone who had pink hair in 2009 and got it done again a couple weeks ago). Still have to tone out the brassiness after bleaching before putting the pink in for the yellow/orange color to be cancelled out.
Love your hair though. I love going crazy with colors.

I colored my Roomie's hair the other day. He's a natural blonde but a darker blonde, and wanted to be platinum, near white. So I did it. Your hair looks great! Just becareful, I'm sure you realize how damaging coloring your hair too much can be! XD
Oh lawd I miss cosmetology!! It's too much fun, and color was my best area. Of course coloring my own hair since I was 14 helps with that. I always used the balayage when I could. I personally felt I got more natural results and precision with that technique :( damn you health issues.
Color theories apply to hair coloring every bit as much as art.
Purple balances Yellow
Red Balances Green
Blue balances orange
So and so forth. Basically Look at a color wheel if you have to. The color directly opposite of the one you don't like on the color wheel will generally balance out whatever you need to fix! ^_^
