*Allowing More Formatting Abilities?

#43946 Posted on 2016-06-03 19:31:08

(Okay the subject might be a bit vague, but hear me out.)

I did a search and haven't really found anything related to this, so here goes:

Currently, most text-related areas allow the use of BBCode. However, places like "Your Journal" does not utilize any kind of formatting. Private notes for horses/divisions don't seem like special/extra text editing abilities would be necessary, so I'm leaving that out of this for now.

It's not an extremely big deal, but definitely would be a bit easier if some additions such as:

- You currently cannot rearrange already-created journal pages unless you renamed them and then mass moved all of their contents. Perhaps it could be possible to drag/drop journal page tabs up and down the sidebar or have arrows that you can click to shift pages to a new position?

- I don't know much about coding, but it definitely would be great if BBCode got changed to rich text editing (for those who don't know the term--ability to edit text as if using a Word document).
Again, I don't know much about coding, so I have no idea if that's a difficult thing to create or not. I don't have anything against BBCode or whatnot, but a lot of the time it'd be easier to ctrl + b to make text bold, for example.

- The addition of a quote ability/or

tab
? If one were to jump to the very end of a forum topic and people were already having a heated discussion going, the new reader would have to go back to wherever they last left off to figure out who's referring to what, etc.
----Vos's addition: Blockquote ability.
- Second addition: maybe a spoilers tag, too? It's not a very big deal, per se, but it could save space on profiles/mass sales posts/etc. to be able to have collapsible spoilers tabs.
- Third addtion: Highlight option?

- Allowing the addition of bullet points/numbered lists? (Not sure if this exists or not, but since I haven't seen anyone use one that wasn't made manually or something...)
----UlyssesBlue's addition: Ability to make tables.

- Since we already have the ability to add images, maybe allow BBCode resizing of said images? (Idea by UlyssesBlue!)
Not everyone has access to immediate photo-editing devices, and I'm pretty sure no newcomer to the idea wants to spend time searching for a free image resizing service after realizing a banner/screenshot/etc. was too big for the page.

- While indenting is possible in "Your Journal" by simply tapping the space bar several times, it's not possible on forum posts (haven't tried profiles yet). Once published, it seems that forum posts simply take the extra beginning line spaces out.

- Some people may be aware that you can use

on profiles/posts, but it also looks as if there's quite a few people who don't know about it. (It only works if you include the end tag as well, FYI--instead of either auto-completing it or working anyway even if you just typed in the starting tag, like a lot of places have it as.) Perhaps include a button in the edit options bar to tell people they can use such formatting.

- What I (and I'm sure other users who utilize the function) would also love for sure was if the journal page had the ability to be permitted to use functions that would allow using bold, italicizing, colored text, hyperlinking, underlining, etc.

I'm currently starting a few journal pages to be able to keep track of my new project lines, and I realized it'd be a bit difficult to note things down without having a giant, uniform wall of broken-up text lines. You can't use any kind of text modification in journals, and I know that I, for one, find it a lot easier if I'm able to use bullet points/different font styles to be able to pick out the information I want.

Changes to what journal pages can do like that may also encourage more people to use them? Some people use documents on Google drive, some offline altogether, but it'd be a bit more convenient if the same features could be found on EV's journal feature itself, I think?

It's not a huge issue, honestly, but I figured it'd be nice. Often, it's difficult for many people to read things if it's not broken up in any way and just kept as an uninteresting text wall of any kind, even with double-spaced paragraphs. Variety helps break text up into more manageable sections, like I tried to do in this post.

Thoughts? Opinions?

"but a lot of the time it'd be easier to ctrl + b to make text bold, for example."

That wouldn't be necessary. You can literally just highlight something you want to be bold, click on the bold option, and only your highlighted text will have the BBC brackets around it. Works for italics, underline, and basically all of the other options available.

I really would like a "quote" option, though. Perhaps in a blockquote or something.

BBCode would be useful in journals and club newsletters.
It would also be helpful if it was expanded to include lists, quotes, tables, and image resizing.

Vos: Technically yes, but editing as such on mobile would be a bit perilous, so to speak, and using crtl + (whatever it is you're trying to do) while typing on an actual computer really is speedier a lot of the time. It lets you have fewer needs to pause if you're trying to drum up something really quickly.

I'll add blockquotes to the list though!

UlyssesBlue: Good point--totally forgot about tables last night honestly xD I'll add that to the list.

Would it not still be tedious on mobile either way? As mobile does not have CTRL (unless you have a special keyboard) and you'd have to highlight anyway? I'm on my cell at present. I'm a fairly fast typer, but I'm faster on a real keyboard. It's tedious whether or not I'm typing out the BBC or pressing the buttons. Mobile is just inherently a butt.

Vos: Yeah unless mobile has its own version of a site, it's always gonna be a butt. :'D But then in that case, a rich text editor would definitely make things easier for a lot of people. It'd be like using the Google docs app version or something similar.

I would find BBCode in journals, bug zapper, Private Messages, submitting tickets and riding schools very useful.
