Why don't you buy horses?

#41785 Posted on 2016-05-28 14:29:32

With all the suggestions and speculation on how to improve Equiverse, something that comes up all the time is that the horse market is bad. Anyone on the game who has tried to sell the horses can tell pretty easily that they never sell well, and as I'm sitting here with 46 horses in my sale barn (my own fault for having that many at one time, but that's besides the point), I was wondering exactly why members of the site don't buy horses.

Now, I understand the basic reasons people might not be out there splurging, but I think a frank discussion of the issue could help to pinpoint what changes might need to be made in the future, as well as simply sating my own curiosity about it.

So, Equiversians, what are the reasons you don't buy horses?
List them, describe them, whatever you feel like you want to do to say why you might decide that you don't want to add more horses.

Note: Remember, these are OPINIONS. I don't want to see people bashing others about their reasoning, but questions and such are allowed. My rules and standards are different from everyone's and I'm sure there are a million other viewpoints on the subject. This is not about blaming people, this is about finding out where the flaws may be.

---------------------------------------------------------------

My reasons are thus:

- Money and space are rarely an issue with me, though I don't buy extremely overpriced horses unless they have some sort of redeeming quality that would equal up to what the price might be. (ex. A 300s foundation horse for 50k - horse could be a custom, or just have a rarer color/marking, a solid but short lineage I could build upon, etc. Otherwise I buy them at the "standard" 10k per 100s.)

- I don't buy horses that are bred young, unless they are a particular color, I can buy the foal to prevent more mass-breeding. I also don't buy horses (often, at least) who have parents that are over-bred.

- I like foundations, second generations, and third generations. When it gets much further than that I worry over inbreeding, or worry that I'll pair it with one of my own that may share an ancestor somewhere down the line.

- I buy horses that seem fitting for their age/generation to their stats. While I do have a lot of lower statted horses - either no breeds I created that had lower stats, or rare colors that I picked up - I generally buy for the stats. A foundation should reach around 550-600s before retirement, a second gen 750-800s before retirement, a third get 950-1000s before retirement, and so on. I'm always reaching for that goal, but I don't keep strictly to it at all times, so long as the horse has other nice qualities.

- When I hit a certain number of foundations, I don't really want to buy more. The process for waiting the months for them to hit breeding age, just to have foals that take all that time over again can be tiring. I like having a bit of varied ages in my horses, so that every once in a while I get the pleasant surprise of getting to breed them. I try not to breed until 18 years old, so it can be a long wait sometimes.

-------------------------------

I think that's it for me! In short, money isn't an issue on my end, and I'm willing to overpay for a nice horse, but for a "plainer" horse I stick to the 10k per 100s. I don't enjoy horses that have families that are bred too often, and I like shorter pedigrees whenever possible. I have a thing for flaxens, silvers, and roans though, they always get me!

Why I don't buy:

1: Money isn't an issue, but it is when one is trying to save enough to buy over 50 credits, and still have some money leftover.

2: Spacing - Really don't want to have to increase my horse space at the moment.

3: Breeding - I am doing okay with my lines, have bought lots of foundations, and low generation horses in the past two months; which most of them are locked away in my baby division. I also follow a strict no-breeding more than 3 times with my horse pairs, usually only breed my horses once, perhaps twice, and keep my stallions stud fees higher and on private only so I can approve of the mare before my boys sire any foals. The stallions are not put up for stud until they are over 700 stats, to help prevent lower stated babies, which helps out the newer players a lot with starting out.

There's rarely, if ever, any horses for sale that are of a similar or higher stat level to my own horses. If there are, they're either in the wrong discipline, are grey, don't have appy patterns, or are gelded.

Adding into that, it's not easy to find foundations who aren't already 5+ years old and have decent stats for their age.

In my defense Im a big spender usually on my main acct Re Dutchies & Trakes and literally spent like $1.7mil on a players entire herd 2 days ago so yeah I have NO problems buying pixels IF its what Im looking for at the time!

However reasons I dont buy horses might include ...

1) Exceptionally low stats for its age
2) Kinda related to the above - if a horse is something like 4th gen & still has very low stats
3) Horse has not been trained enough
4) Horse is not the colour Im looking for (this only applies to specific breed projects)
5) Has literally just been bred to store foundation parents immediatly after their being bought so only has like 104 stats
6) Has too many foals (yes horses have hundreds of babies in RL I get it! I personally don't like it on EV & therefore avoid it)
7) Horse is overpriced for its stats/age ratio (literally seen a Dutchie a couple of days ago for sale for $100k with 100 stats as a 4yo - no thanks)
8) Horse isn't the gender I want (Having major issues with all my foals of certain breeds being born the same gender & Im too tight to loki dagger them all! So they are locked for a while)
9) Horse has ancestors that are too common (though this is mostly regarding my Trake herd)
10) Horse is inbred (though this has probably been fixed on the new EV)
11) Horses are not up to my existing herds standard.

I prefer to start and keep to my own lines. Since this game doesn't allow us to delete/set free/whateveryouwannacall it and doesn't allow inbreeding, I'm going to end up keeping a lot more horses than I normally would. Eventually, I'm going to get to a point where I'll have to wait for some to die in order to breed more, but if that's what I have to do, then so be it. If I've worked on them for some time, I really don't want to stick them in the rescue, as much as I love buying horses from the rescue, not having any other outlet to "dispose" of pixels actually hurts the game. But, that is *my opinion.*

Also, I am a chronic record keeper and I like knowing where my horses came from and where they're going. I've picked up several horses from other breeders but it is isn't my usual m.o. And since there's a cap on what we can own at any given time (until I keep making money to extend it), I'd rather have horses that fit what I said a minute ago.

Of course, now that keeping some geldings around will help make money (have I said yet that I LOVE THE RIDING SCHOOLS?) I may end up buying some stallions no one else is using and starting a gelding cash horde....but again, that is limited at the moment until I can buy more slots. :) On another game that I've been playing for more than five years I'm pretty much a hoarder of pretty pixels, so I'm sure I'll end up that way here, too.

Why dont I buy horses...

1, Private auctions..dislike them..If you really want to sell your horse..throw me a number..I put bids on horses in the past and waited soooo long before getting a notifiation that my bid was accepted , that I totally forgot I even bid on the horse... If Im looking to buy a horse, I want to purchase it at that time..not 3 weeks down the road.. ( I still think a public auction house would work better for people wanting their horses sold via biddig.. All auction horses in one location , like the rc...So anyone wanting to bid on horses or sell horses via bidding, can list the in the public auction.
As soon as I see " For private bid" in the sales list...I skip oer it...On rare occassions, I'll look, if the horse is a particular colour I looking for or something like that.
*** public auctions would make things a lot more interesting** just my opinion. I think they would also help boost prices and sales. Think about it, if the pubic could all view and follow the auction of a particular horse, and they begin to notice ..wow a lot of peeps are bidding on this one..he must be good...They'll want to throw a bid in as well..
2 Over priced - eg. I'll see a 0 yr old foal with 400+ stats up for 200k...I go and look at it...Now if the horse is trained in western, lets say... I wanna see big fat 0's beside strength agility and endurance....( or as low as I can get...) But more often than not...the stat dispersal isnt to my liking...ie.. finding a '98' in any of the undesired areas.. for 200k I want single digits in the undesirable areas ( again- just an eg)

3. I dont like to see 'deceased' in a horse's lines..Yes, we all have them and yes the old accounts will be imported at some point...but I try to avoid them when I can..and do still see a few up for bidding or sale with alot of deceased' in their lines selling for high prices

i am the same as windspun :D
i love instantaneousness lol
also i don't like to see deceased but i know that in a year they will all be brought over but that's like two-three gens in that will still have deceased (:

at first i bought all stores and didn't want to purchase outside lines but i have been finding myself buy more and more from other players - price not a problem[/b] (: i am actually going broke from buying horses more than buying art xD

i also look at the amount of foals the horse has had, if i am buying a horse at age 12 and it has 4 foals then by the time it is 20 and im done breeding its 3 foals or whichever i do and on top of offering to the public the horse could have like 10-15 foals which i don't like to do since i want clean lines and offer more lines without having the same horse over and over (:

I can definitely agree with most, if not all, the points above. Most of them are the same ones as mine, regarding horses being overpriced for their stats/age, pedigrees - wanting to keep mine to myself and such - and not enjoying 'Deceased' in the lines.

I didn't think about how private auctions could look to potential buyers. I definitely understand the reasoning behind not wanting to bid. I normally do private auctions on my horses not because I want people to get into bidding wars over them, but because I want to screen the potential buyers before I sell.

I do realize though, not all people put their horses up for auction that way, nor do I have anything at all on my page to signify that's how I have my auctions set up. Normally the 'minimum bid' is just the price I'm seeking for the horse, and simply want to know who my foals and other lovelies are going to. XD

I think I've been playing the game wrong... I've been on EV for a little over 10 months & have bought less than 10 horses from the EC. I've bought most of my horses from other people. Some of those horses have been Foundation, but I haven't been expressly searching for Foundation. I'm looking to buy 4 more horses now. Honestly, I find I have a hard time trying to find horses to buy.

Reasons I May Not Buy:
1. Not the right age or stat range for the horse I'm trying to find a mate for
2. Overpriced
3. Over bred
4. Related to my horse
5. Owner not taking care of horses (You'd think this wouldn't still happen since we can lock divisions & accounts, but sadly I still see it.)

***Just the opinions of a newer player***

1.Money-I just can't afford to buy a decent(400+) stated horse whenever I feel like it so I have to be very careful with what I buy.

2.Space^^^same reasons

Breeding wise, I don't really mind crossing lines as long as it is as far as I want to allow it. Possibly people aren't buying horses from players to avoid crossing lines and would rather buy foundations.

I do see a lot of people that still don't take care of their horses, sadly. I can understand the odd day of "oh shoot, did I forget to check EV?" but I would think all horses at this point, no matter how they were born, would get fed/treated/trained/shown. I realize it's not always cheap for non-deluxe members who don't have their own stables and such, but maybe that's a problem that needs to be looked at.

Then again, with the new riding center you can make a lot of money/treats/stats, and I think everyone gets to use it - right?

I used to have the age/stat range problem as well, and still have the stat range issue, but lately if the ages just aren't matching up I've been locking the one that's older until it's pair can catch up. Not the cleanest or most time effective way of doing it, but it's working out so far. I put the date to unlock in their name, so I don't accidentally miss it either - though if I need to lock the division with the aging horse it throws it all off. >.>

You're looking for Vanners, right? If you want (I don't know what specialty you're looking for) I'm going to be selling off my vanners soonish. You can see if there are any in my herd that might be what you need.

@ Nienor - if definitely can be hard to get the money for the "better" horses, with the high stats and all of that. It can be especially hard to upgrade for more room as well, especially at the upper levels.

The Equine Center was made for that reason, I assume, so that you can get cheap horses and raise/train them yourself - but if you're impatient like I am (and was at my start of the game) it can get tedious to wait the 15+ years before breeding them. I'm also assuming that's why a lot of newer players may breed young, for the excitement of it all.

Maybe I'll do a giveaway at some point, of some of my better horses that are for sale but not selling. It definitely can be difficult to get started in this game.

I buy and sell all the time... I'm not as picky when it comes to pedigrees. I have only a few store horses because I don't have the patience to breed conformation into them, and even then, I rarely breed store x store because I would prefer to have better conformation and stats over clean pedigree.

I won't buy a horse that has terrible stats (for its age) or conformation. I avoid grays, and in my Gypsy Vanners I avoid Tobianos (breeding solids). I will occasionally overpay for a horse that I want.

@Nienor - That's a good point about newer players not having the funds to buy the horses they may want. I started out with like 2 horses at a time due to money issues.

@Nittrous - I was quite surprised to run across horses not being taken care of after the recode. One account was a deluxe and none of the divisions were locked nor was the account. I understand that things happen unexpectedly in life, but I don't think that's what's happening with these horses. Yes, I am looking for 2 Vanners. I'll happily take a look at yours. Thank you!
