So, as many of you know, I've been riding a very sweet, old Arab cross named Chico. I love him to pieces but don't always get to go out and see him. Well, in the last 24 hours, his owner let us know that he is now lame. I guess when he got his teeth floated a few days ago he tripped while still under and hurt his shoulder pretty bad. Needless to say, I've already cried a bit this morning. I was just hoping to get into some real stuff and we were starting to get along well, and now I can't ride him anymore. So now I'm left with his little reiner pasture-mate, Cadillac (Cat). She seems pretty chill for a mare, but I'm still wary. Geldings are far more my speed. Anyway, just figured I'd let that out. I'm - as the title states - totally bummed. But hopefully I'll do well with Cat.

Kept your head up! At least you will still be able to see him and such! As for Cat I am sure she will grow on you :)

Mares can be funny. I've owned 3 mares personally. One was only sometimes crazy, the other was crazy anytime someone rode her, but was sweet on the ground, and the last was an angel sent from heaven. She was a nanny horse and would do anything you asked her. She only ever tried me once and I nicely told her there'd be none of those shenanigans and after that we were best friends. She greeted me every morning no matter what, and followed me through the pasture like a puppy. She taught my husband how to ride and she taught me how to trust horses again. My last three horses before her were, to put it lightly, insane and took years of work each to get them anywhere near the term "rideable." Quest was a once in a lifetime horse, sad I only had her for a year.

I wouldn't be wary just because she's a mare. I get really annoyed with the mare stereotype, same with the Arab stereotype. I've owned 4 mares and 1 gelding. Only one mare had a slightly "mareish" attitude and that was more a dominance thing as she didn't get worse in heat or anything like that.

Thanks, all of you. And, like I said, Cat is pretty laid back. The lead mare out of the three and Chico is a palomino named Butter, and the only one who tests her is another named Mercedez, but I think they're both pretty young. Chico and Cat are older, as far as I know. So I'll give her a try. And I have experience with the mare-iest mares in existence, so I don't know why I'm so wary around them. XD

I once had a very mare-y mare named Abby. She was terrible, depending on the day you could either love on her for hours at a time and she'd be glad to be around you or she might just chase you across the pasture trying to kill you. I was pretty young at the time but I remember her biting my mom real good, it left her whole forearm bruised for a few weeks! I don't know what happened to her. We opened the gate one day to get another horse out and she muscled past all of us, ran into the woods and we never saw her again. True story, I swear!

I own a mare.. as many of you may know.. she is the sweetest little thing I could ever dream of.. we put two year olds on her and she is fine... I wouldn't be scared.. in fact I prefer mares as I believe they are way more mannered.. sure they can be a little moody but gelding just don't really suit me. I had a gelding who thought he was a stallion.. recently got rid of him.. that is the main reason I don't want gelding.. and I think they can be a little pushy sometimes. Hope he gets better and you are able to get along with the mare!!!
