How'd I do?

#31374 Posted on 2016-04-16 08:48:09

I created this for a contest here on EV. It won but only because it was the one single entry. I'm just wondering how I did. Using free lines was acceptable in the contest. The theme was a natural Clydesdale. I chose to do a Chestnut. This is the first digital character I've created so please don't be too harsh. Thank you for looking!

needs more shading and blending if you wanted to do more than just flat colors. It's a simple design, nothing to special really, but over all it's a good start. way better than my first attempt

It's very cute, Valzed! The color looks a bit red for chestnut, but I really like it!

Thank you all for your helpful & kind comments!

@Buck - I really want to learn how to do shading but haven't found a tutorial I understand.

@Syrien - It didn't seem that red when I was doing it. Lack of experience on my part. I'll use it as a learning experience & hopefully know better.

I agree with Buck and Syrien. I can whip up a quick tutorial for shading if you like :)

Have you done the colouring on a layer underneath the lines?

If not, I recommend doing that. You can't colour in the lines then! I do notice the lighter lines around the outline :)

I really like this though!

Its very neat! The leg markings look great, the detail on the shoes and eyes is fab. For your first digital character he's amazing! You can only get better from here c:

Val, for me it was a lot of trial and error. Some tutorials helped nudge me in the right direction, but, ultimately, It ended up just beign an epiphany one day and having the ultimate experiment in my head lol

Personally, for my digital references for characters. i dont like shading usually. The little bit I do see here is fine, and adds personality to the image itself. ^^
you stayed inside the lines, and i like that.
for being your first i'd say it looks great
just keep practicing! Seriously, that will take you extremely far in this artsy world.

Thank you for all the suggestions & kind words! I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who has struggled with shading.

@Magic - I'd be so grateful for a shading tutorial! So many I find talk about cell shading or are for human characters. Also, I did do the coloring on a different layer. The body color is one layer, the mane & tail another, the hooves & eye a 3rd, and the attempt at shading a 4th. Oh, and the lines are they're own layer. I was so worried about messing part of it up that I used as many layers as I could keep track of.

Val - That's about how I set up my layers! I have the base color on one, then the mane and tail on another (sometimes on separate layers), then eyes/nose/hooves/inner ears on a third, and new layers for each layer of highlighting/shadows I add. Never be afraid to have too many layers! They're super useful and it's easier to start with more layers and then merge them than it is to do the opposite!
