Unseen mealy bay?

#29861 Posted on 2016-04-12 04:11:58

Hello!

I'm a little lost when it comes to the colour modifier Mealy or Pangare and how/when it shows on EV.

If I look in the genetics guide, E A P is a Mealy bay with a white belly - aka, visible pangare (see HERE).
If I use the option to make a custom horse in the Equine Center, a Mealy bay als has visible pangare, ie the white belly (see HERE).
Even if I add other modifiers, such as Silver and Tovero, it still shows (see HERE).

If I look at my own mustang mare, a Silver Mealy Bay Tovero, she looks like this. Initially I thought it was a bug and posted it in the bug board, but according to Abbey pangare doesn't show on bay.

I'm perfectly willing to believe this, but then there would be a bug in the custom horse option.

Either way works with me, though not really for my hope to breed beautiful Mealy mustangs. I do really want to understand/know, though, so does anyone know the conclusive answer to this?

i think the issue is that there is a bug in the custom horse option, and that as a result, the genetics guide is incorrect.

pangare can only show up on a chestnut coat, so the fact that it appears on a bay is incorrect.

you can still breed mealy mustangs, but they'll need have a chestnut base coat for it to show up. i, too, love the pangare look (as well as flaxen), but i tell myself that since silver doesn't show up on chestnut, at least nature gave us flaxen and pangare :)

Thank you! Time to go puzzle and see if I can get a chestnut foal out of her xD

At least I understand now, so thanks for that! Just for clarity's sake, could palomino's, dunalino's and the like also display pangare/mealy rather than just carry the gene?

Palomino should, I can't remember the genetics of a dunalijo off the top if my head, but anything ee should in theory display mealy

anything that is genetically ee will show pangare/mealy. for mustangs, that includes palomino, dunalino, red dun, cremello, cremello dun, gold champagne, gold champagne dun, iveory gold champaign, and ivory gold chamapge dun.

you could get a pangare foal from that mare if you bred her to an ee stallion and got a bit of luck that she doesn't pass down her E :)

Actually, pangare/mealy should show up on chestnuts and bays, just not blacks. Pangare is mostly seen on bays in the wild (Exmoors are a great example of this). There is a definite difference between pangare type mealy and the mealing you see on brown horses. Normal brown-type mealing is not as exstensive as pangare.

The bottom horse is obviously black-based with agouti. It is not wild bay (the black on the legs is far too high and solid for that) and it is not brown (coat color is way too light, especially since it looks like its in winter coat when browns become almost black in color). The amount of mealing is also way too extensive to be brown-type.

Browns - muzzle, eyes, inner elbows, flanks, inner thighs, buttocks.
Pangare - muzzle, eyes, basically the entire underside including all the way down the legs.
