RL Pet ACL Issue

#271461 Posted on 2023-12-24 08:01:49

On 12/14 our 10 year old Australian Cattle Dog was playing the back yard with my daughter and our other ACD, when she did a quick stop and spin and potentially sprained or tore her ACL. When it happened I heard her cry out and then my daughter started to yell for me to come outside. When I went out, Baylee was laying on the ground with her leg up and I thought at the time maybe she just tweaked the leg. I got her inside and checked her over and when I looked at the leg, I swore she had broken it. The leg was just dangling and limp, with the major tendon in the back of the leg extremely lax. I loaded her up into the truck and rushed her down to the vet. While at the vet her manipulated the leg all kinds of directions, extended the leg, etc. and never once did she cry or yip in pain. He believes she either severely sprained her ACL or did a partial tear. We are 10 days into "complete rest" and there has been some improvement. At this time she is toe down and will at times put the foot totally down. Keeping an ACD, or any dog, on complete rest is much harder than one would think. Baylee does not have a "walking" gait, she more goes at a "trot" at all times. Trying to get her to slowww down has been interesting. She also really prefers to lay in our bed, which is rather high up, so now that is off limits. She has, unfortunately, gotten up into the bed a few times recently, much to my frustration, and I worry she is harming herself and setting herself back on recovery. I've taken my sons bed down to the floor (sorry kid!) because her morning routine is to go from her bed in our room to his room in the morning. When I am not working from home, I have a camera set up in her space so I can keep an eye on her during the day. Thankfully, she is a bed princess, and likes to lay in them. She has 3 different ones in all her favorite spots that she will stay in. I would say about 90% of the time right now, she is doing what she should be doing and resting. It's the other 10% that concerns me.

I suppose my question is this, has anyone else experienced an ACL injury in their pupper? For a sprain, how long until you started to see marked improvement? In my research I've seen it average anywhere from 6-12 weeks. For an ACL surgery, how was the cost and the recovery like? Baylee is 10 years old, so the anesthesia risks are higher, but I cannot see her limping around from the rest of her days. ACDs are well known to live well past the age of 15, so she has the protentional to be with us for years to come. Outside of the ACL issue now, she has always been extremely healthy, active and happy. We've had Baylee since she was 10 weeks old, and Baylee is my husbands girl. When I called him at work crying, he left right away and drove an hour and a half to get to the vet's office to be with her. She is still a happy girl, just not loving the confinement she is living with! Pics below of the husband and the Baylee Mae. Her love for him and vise versa is RIDICULOUS lol I tell him all the time I am playing second fiddle to her...he doesn't deny it haha  💜

I have not had a pet with a torn or sprained ACL in the past but last year one of our dogs slipped on ice and slipped a disc in his back. It was very touch and go and we weren't sure if he was going to make it or not. I will say in our case acupuncture helped him a lot as well as real rest, which meant kennel rest. I would suggest having her in a kennel when possible to keep her from reinjuring while she heals.

Hoping for the best for Baylee and you guys!

The slipped disc recently happened to a co-worker of my husbands. She ended up taking her to the vet hospital at the college for treatment. She has no idea what happened as she was out of town and her dog-sitter found her pup when she showed up that day.

We have been looking into leg braces for dogs as well. I've had 4 ACL surgeries (one the same knee!) and the added support of a brace was def helpful. She has a follow up coming up in a couple weeks to see how the vet things she is progressing and will discuss a brace for Baylee as well. The vet suggested a kennel, and I concur, it's getting my husband on board with putting the kennel back up and her in to. Baylee hasn't been in a kennel since she was probably 5 years old. It is not that she isn't crate trained, or very well behaved in the crate, she just gives you this look of "what did I do wrong?" when she is in there, and my husband is the most soft hearted human when it comes to her, he won't keep her in it. I might  drag it out today while he is at work lol if it's already set up when he gets home, what can he do? 🤣
