I honestly do not notice the farmstead overview in a way that is a hindrance, so it doesn't bother me that it's there personally even if I'm off and on with using the farmstead. I'd prefer it stays even if there's nothing planted as a reminder. 

An option to sell the farmstead at a reduced fee or "dig up" for a charge I'd support if someone decides its not for them or needs quick cash if it was sellable.
