Horse-Based Achievements, Collections, and Badges

#260319 Posted on 2022-09-08 13:35:04

One of the site’s biggest set-backs currently is user retention and engagement, as well as horse sales. One implementation that I know could improve both of these issues would be a catalog of in-game achievements. Not only will this give players of all experience something to work towards, it will also boost the market for horses.

Some potential achievements:

1) Collectors Achievements
These can be based on horses per breed or in general. To make this less coding intensive, a player can choose to submit a horse to the collection for consideration, and any of the achievements that it fulfills will be met. Otherwise, the achievement could be unlocked as soon as the horse is obtained. Originally, my idea for this could be like a collectors book in a sense, with each page having its own category (like breed), and when each page is fulfilled, there is a large prize or badge earned to be displayed on a user’s profile.
An example of a category could be Paint horses. The achievements could be based on, let’s say, having all 5 markings (leg and face) on one horse, or color. For example, there would be one achievement per color of horse possible in a breed. When every individual achievement in that breed is unlocked, it will fulfill the page’s collection and unlock a badge.
Another ‘collection’ could be conformation, let’s say, or height. When a horse is bred or purchased with a certain conformation, it can fulfill an achievement.

2) Showing achievements
Some possible ideas for this category could be having horses with x trophies won. This would boost the demand for good show horses purchased between players.
Another idea under this category could be a progress bar on a user’s page displaying the total trophies earned by the user’s horses. These trophies would cumulate over generations. Once a player accumulates a certain number of trophies, or first place trophies specifically, they can earn a sort of badge displayed on their page.

Each achievement could earn a small monetary prize (depending on the rarity for color and markings). Each complete collection could unlock a badge and possibly a couple of credits or a special item.

If you have any concerns or doubts about this idea, please post in the comments! I’m very passionate about this idea and I think it could bring more active gameplay and goals back into equiverse. I firmly believe that this will not only bring more long-term engagement to the game, but also income in the form of special items and more long-term use.

I love this idea! I play lots of different games on Steam and regularly achievement hunt. It's a great way to keep people interested - they get to play the game they like, and get an extra fun boost by having a specific goal they're working towards. I think it'd be especially good for EV - a lot of players like myself might aim for generally getting rarer genes into my herd, and generally getting lower NSS with each gen but there's never really an end goal for me. Achievements would give a (relatively) shorter term and definite goal for people.

I think having a set of achievements associated with conformation, stats, colours, show winnings, markings, some event associated achievements, and maybe some miscellaneous ones like getting the maximum money from the fountain, or getting 3 apples in a row in apple bobbing, or finding peppermints in Leisure Riding (if you can even still do that lol) would be good. That way someone that breeds exclusively for colours could still get that nice feeling of "completing" the achievements (for colour), and vice versa exclusively for stats.

For stats achievements, achievements for "breed a horse with under 50 NSS" etc might help get the idea across that low NSS is important to aim for if you want to do well in shows (a point that I think is woefully under communicated at present), as well as being something for the show breeders to aim for that wouldn't as easily be trumped by cube breeders.

I think it'd be good to not make achievements retrospective, and only counting things that happen after they are added (e.g. breeding a foal with 500 stats achievement only applying to foals bred after achievements were introduced, same for breeding a flaxen horse or something). I can imagine some older players would get a lot of achievements instantly, which could make them less inclined to go after achievements since there was no effort required to get the first dozen.

I don't mind about what reward would be associated with getting the achievements. A token amount (e.g. 2k) would be nice, but I would go for it even if it was purely aesthetic (shown on homepage and/or under forum posts).

I completely agree!

I think another category, after some thought, could be user interaction based.
For example, you could unlock an achievement collection based on how many times you breed to other players’ studs or broods. Like, let’s say your first is earned after 10 breedings, then 25, then 50, then 100 or something. This would boost interactions between players.

One possible issue I could see coming from this would be alt accounts. To this we could have a alt account registration feature where a player would link their main account to up to two alt accounts so achievements wouldn’t count if sales or studs are performed between these linked accounts. But that’s another suggestion entirely and has no core importance to this particular thread lol

Yeah, there wouldn't be much of a way around having achievements for x horses bought/sold or x horses bred to studs/broods without alt account registration (which could still be gotten around by people simply not registering the accounts). Though who knows, could still be worth adding with the hope that most people will not cheat.

I am insane so I wrote out all of my ideas for what achievements could exist. Yes, I am procrastinating.

Conformation Achievement Set
Breed a horse with 99.99 conformation
Achievements for 99, 98, 97, 95, 90, 85, 80, 75, 70, 65

Statistics Achievement Set
Achievements for 12k, 11k, 10k, 9k, 8k, 7k, 6k, 5k, 4k, 3k, 2k, 1k, 800, 600, 400
Achievements for 55, 50, 45, 40, 35, 30, 25, 20, 15, 10, 5 non-specialty stats (I don't know if 0 is possible)

Colours (could have this divided by breed, as some breeds do not have all genes?)
Achievements for each colour (as shown in Search Horses colour drop-down)
Achievements for each modifier (Silver, Pangare, Flaxen... idk what else there is)
Achievements for each body marking type (all KIT variants, rabicano, overo, splash, leopard, pattern 1, pattern 2)
Breeding a gg horse from 2 Gg horses / breeding a GG horse from 2 Gg horses
Have a horse with 5 heterozygous genes
Have a horse with only homozygous genes
(Could do loads more here)

Show winnings achievement set
Earn 10k, 100k, 1mil, 10mil EVD in shows
Earn 10k, 100k, 1mil, 10mil points
Earn 10, 50, 100, 500, 1000, 5 000, 10 000, 50 000, 100 000 etc gold medals
Earn x amount of silver and bronze medals

Markings achievement set
Having same marking on all legs (ankle, coronet, pastern, sock, stocking)
Having 4 different markings on each leg

Miscellaneous
Complete 100% of young horse training for a foal
Complete 100% of young horse training for 10 foals
Complete 100% of young horse training for 100 foals
Win at apple bobbing
Get the maximum money possible from the fountain
Win at the lottery
Win 20 higher or lower rounds in a row
Win 10 coin tosses in a row
Some club related ones (register 50 horses)
Adopt x horses from the rescue centre

I love all of those ideas.

Originally, at least for the colors, I was thinking you could complete a “collection” by breed of every possible coat color. So for horses with no modifiers it would be easy with 3-4 colors (depending on if they have grey). But for something like paints, that would be a collection of many many coat colors.
Patterns and pattern combinations would be in a different set of collections by breed.

This all sounds great to me and I would love to see something like this implemented into the game. Most other games I've played have some sort of achievements.

There was something kind of similar in the works on beta called Quests, where you would have to meet certain requirements in order to complete it, but not sure what happened to it. Support achievements in general though.

I love the idea of having official achievements. I already have one on my page and I know that there are a lot of players who do the same thing.

My only request is that it will hide all other breeds and only show breeds I want to show. For example, I owned multiple breeds in the past while I am trying to build up my bank. I probably will meet some achievements for those breeds. However, my focuses are Clydesdales and Vanners. I rather only show/see Clydesdales and Vanners achievements and keep all other breeds out of the sight.

I think this is a great idea and would really make a huge difference in the horse market and thus the economy.

I would actually love some kind of leader-boards showing who has the horses with highest stats per breed/discipline. Most horses bred/care for the day prior. Maybe a link to random foals bred that day? Or show winning horses?

Just another way to add interaction and friendly competition between players. I'm curious to see if anything like this could be implemented in the future. It would be really cool!
