Pumpkin is Hurt

#25400 Posted on 2016-04-01 00:00:19

So, about four or so days ago, we noticed something was wrong with Pumpkin's eye. Then, when we got closer, we saw everything that was wrong. Her head was and still is swolen. Though, the swollen is down, but her eye and lip is still bad. She had bite marks all over her head, and her mouth was bleeding. Immediately we knew who did it, our next door neighbors dog.

You'd expect a Labrador to be nice right? Wrong, this dog is vicious, and the owner is well a butt. We talked to him once, and he said "Yeah, they fight sometimes." He said it like it was funny, and as he was saying this Cody, and the dog got in the fight through the fence. Cody was fine, the Lab probably wasn't overly happy losing to a Beagle. That was almost 6 months ago.

I can't take the dogs on walks anymore, because if that dog is out, and about...I don't know what could happen. My dogs are not naturally mean, but they are protective of me and the horses. So, if they see a dog or other animal outside the fence that is threatening me or the horses. They will defend us. We didn't teach them that, it just came naturally to them. We correct them, if things get out of hand.
Like with the Lab. But, I think at least Copper, and Pumpkin know very well that I'm afraid of that dog.

I don't know exactly who stuck their head through our fence. But, either way Pumpkin got it worse. Cause I saw the dog a few hours later, after giving Pumpkin some pain medicine. He didn't have anything significant on him. Before I show pictures, I will say we've put new wire on the fence, so there's no way they can touch each other. Dad did it immediately the next day.

Pumpkin slept in the house, and Copper and Cody were snuggled up right with as if protecting her. I slept in the living room with her, to make sure she was comfortable. Barely slept, as I was so worried about her.

Anyways, I'm putting the pictures in links, in case you guys can't take seeing injured dogs.
Oh, and Pumpkin is a Rottweiler x Australian Shepherd mix. Nobody truly believes us, but if you saw where she likely came from. You'd change your mind lol.

Here's Pumpkin when she's her beautiful healthy self.

Warning: These pictures aren't too pretty. They're not the worst however

We gave her an antibiotic, the vet had given us for her last wound. We're still giving it to her, and she takes it so easily. At the moment she can only eat most food, and even that's tough. But, she's doing surprisingly well despite that. We've always noticed she's a very hardy dog.

She's been bitten by an alligator turtle, a copperhead, and a raccoon but somehow has fully healed from all of them (with our help of course). She didn't need to go to the vet for any of those injuries. She doesn't have a single scar.

Also we're moving so we won't have to deal with that for too much longer. While dad was putting on the new wire, the owner was out there. He didn't offer a single word to my dad, he didn't even wave.

Anyways, please no rude comments.

That's terrible :/ I would keep a close eye on it. If the swelling doesn't come down it could be abscessed. Dog bites are a pain in the but because they cause pocketing. I hope she gets better soon!!

The swelling is almost gone it seems, she's still fairly inactive. If her eye doesn't heal within a week or gets worse we'll take her to the vet. We have one about 5 miles from us, so it's very convenient.

Is she squinting her eye or holding it shut at all?

So squinting is the only thing I'd worry about when it comes to eyes. She could have a corneal abrasion on her eye that would need some antibiotic drops multiple times a day. I'm just a tech though and I can't see her - so it's not medical advice, just kinda.. I'd keep an eye on that - if its not better soon it might be worthwhile taking her in. Honestly if you called where I work I'd tell you to bring her in today.

Thanks for letting me know. I'll take a look today, and see if it's getting any better. She's very good about me, looking at her injuries. I'm hoping it's nothing too serious, but I'm happy her other wounds are doing better. Today, she's been much more active. I've been watching her run around the pasture through the window.

If it's not any better within tomorrow or the next day. We'll call and make an appointment. I'll definitely see if we can get some eye drops for her as well.

Oh, your poor Pumpkin! She is absolutely adorable! I hope she recovers quickly and I'm sorry you have such awful neighbors. :/ I feel bad for their dog. It's not the dog's fault if it's poorly trained... But I'm so sorry for your Pumpkin as well! She's just too gorgeous and looks so sweet!

Yeah, she's a sweetheart. We found her on our driveway, 9-10 years ago. She was only about 4-6 months old, she immediately jumped in our car. We took her straight to our house, as she had a collar embedded into her neck. We managed to get it out, and there's no scar. She's the perfect dog, loves everyone, and is wonderful with the horses.

Yes, the owner is the one to blame mostly. From what I can tell the dog could be around the same age as Pumpkin (10). Also Pumpkin found us in October, so that's the reason we came up with Pumpkin. As it was near Halloween.

Some owners just need to teach their dogs better. Smh
Glad that Pumpkin is healing and that y'all are getting away from that neighbor. Keep us updated as she returns back to her happy, healthy, beautiful self. ♥

We'll be taking Pumpkin to the vet next week. Her eye is not looking too pretty. Hopefully, it's nothing too serious.
