2021 Kentucky Derby

#238716 Posted on 2021-05-03 08:30:37

Anyone go to the race, or watched it on your TV? I watched the whole thing on Saturday. #14 Essential Quality was my pick even though they were the favorite. Turns out the little undefeated Medina Spirit the only horse in this year's Kentucky Derby trained by the famous Bob Baffert won the Kentucky Derby. Bob has now won 7 (yes 7) Kentucky Derbies! What an accomplishment! Even celebrities go to the Derby. Who was there this year? Tom Brady and Arron Rodgers were both at this year's Kentucky Derby.

Black horse with a small star, and blue padding on the bridle (close to the right) is Medina Spirit winner of the 2021 Kentucky Derby. Essential Quality is the darker dapple grey horse, and Soup and Sandwich as the lighter dapple grey who will place 19th.

  • First: $1,860,000

  • Second: $600,000

  • Third: $300,000

  • Fourth: $150,000

  • Fifth: $90,000

Before the big race there where other races. One of them was the Turf Classic. This race's favorite was Colonel Liam. Smooth Like Straight was another opponent in this race. As they got closer and closer to the finish line, Smooth Like Straight passed the line the same time as Colonel Liam did! It was too close to call for a winner as officials called a dead heat. What is a dead heat? A dead heat is when it's too close to call for a exact winner so they split the purse or winning money. The two horses finished with a time of 1:47:99. What a thrilling race to watch!

I watched the Derby on tv this year as I do most years. When I looked up the field a couple days before the race my first instinct was that Medina Spirit was likely the horse to beat because he's trained by Baffert(Just look at how many derby winners he's trained, AND that he has two triple crown winners under his belt). But I figured he wasn't the favorite because of something others could see in him that I couldn't so I decided to pick another favorite. I was torn between Hot Rod Charlie and Known Agenda at this point.

Honestly I would have been super happy if Soup and Sandwich won for that name alone. But I was sad when he started falling off towards the end.

But I'm super excited about Medina Spirit. He's such a huge hearted little horse that lived up to his reputation of never letting another horse pass. I'll be interested in seeing if he goes to the Preakness and the Belmont, and if he does, how well he goes.

He's going to the Preakness. Bob said, "We just have to get him to do what he just did today." Did you see the part where they showed the Soup and Sandwich commercial? I still have that stuck in my head. I was going for Essential Quality. The 2018 Kentucky Derby winner was Justify the favorite, and my pick. I love Justify, and well Seabiscuit. Those are my top two favorite racehorses.

I didn't watch it this year but, I defiantly agree with Bob being a great horse trainer. I was only ever interested in American Pharoah when he won back in 2015 and then I obsessed over the handsome boy. An got lucky and actually got to go to Kentucky in the summer of 2017 and meet the handsome boy on a farm tour. Of course a fence separated but just being close to him was enough for me and seeing how big and handsome he was was a lifetime experience.

Wow. I'd love to go to Kentucky. To see the Derby, go to Breyerfest, and see all the horses. It would be could to see a famous racehorse.

I went for both Oaks and Derby Day in 2019(the year Maximum Security was disqualified), it was a lifelong dream of mine to see the Derby in person. Very cool to see in person, very exciting, but you see more of the actual races when you're home and watching from your TV.

I really wanted Soup and Sandwich to win cause his name. Also have a soft spot for grays, just love them!

Greys are beautiful. I love their dapples. Wow, I'll be soo happy if I will actually go one year. My mom said that if we go one year, we'd have to wear the hats. I get that it's better to see the race on TV, but it's really cool to go there. I still don't really understand why Maximum Security was disqualified.

@horsegirl, Maximum Security was disqualified 2019 because he got in another horse's lane and cut him off.  After further investigation, it was found that cutting another horse off like that was against the rules and resulted in disqualification.

I watched the Derby on Saturday and that morning I had been going through all the horses to see their odds, trainers, jockies, etc and Medina Spirit was actually my pick.  The people that I was with all did a bunch of pots (gambling games where you go to a certain "pot" and pick a random horse out of a cup and if that horse wins, you get the all the money from whichever pot you won).  I know gambling is bad, but everyone did it including myself and I only spent, like, $10.  I won one of the pots and got $20 back lol.
