Role plays are kind of like making a book except you're not writing it by yourself lol. It has you or one other person, or multiple people writing. Depends on what the creator of the role play wants.
Basically, someone will make a story and post they are looking for members and you are then able to read what the story is about and see if you want to join. They will explain the rules on joining their role play.
You then will create your character that you want to play and wait for the role play to start and just start posting as your character. It's just something fun to do and pretty interesting to see where stories lead and how everyone's characters interact together. I started role playing at 8 years old, and I'm now 27 lol.
Some helpful tips though is, don't write in first person. Most people starting out do that and generally the role play community doesn't like it. Write in third person. Example of first and third person below:
First person writing example:
I really love the way those flowers look!
Third person writing example:
Rosy really loved the way those flowers looked.
Also, when you role play you're kinda expected to role play/write in a specific way. For example, I'll write up a basic look at what a role play post would look like:
Example:
Damien was walking up to Rosy, seeing her smell a flower bush. Man, she sure is pretty! Hey Rosy, how are you today?
This is a improper way to role play. It would be best to change the look of your writing so it's clear what your character is thinking, saying, or doing. So change it to this:
Example:
Damien was walking up to Rosy, seeing her smell a flower bush. 'Man, she sure is pretty!' He thought to himself.
"Hey Rosy, how are you today?" He asked her.
So him thinking to himself part was changed to italic text and I used these ' ' around the thought. You can also use * * those. Some people just use italic text but add the "He thought to himself" bit to let people know it was a thought.
When your character speaks you need to use these: " "
it's also good to speak in detail if you can so be more literate but when you're new it's a lot to take in so just let people know you're new and they should go easy on you until you start to get a good grasp of things.
Role plays can be long because you're making a story and acting out every detail from what your character is doing, saying, thinking, interacting with others, etc. So they can take a long time. And not to mention not everyone being able t reply on a regular basis.
To be in a role play you just need to see which ones are accepting new members and join, or create your own story.
some important rules that are general for all role plays is you cannot kill off someones character unless they are in agreement they want it to happen. You cannot control someone else's character and most important you must read Equiverse's rules on role plays.
Let me know if you have any more questions.
