Sad & nervous - our immediate neighbors are moving

#224048 Posted on 2020-06-09 06:50:52

After something like 22 years our immediate neighbours to our right are moving to be by the seaside. It's a sad & nervous time now because they were/are great neighbours & the last thing anyone wants is bad neighbours moving in next to them; I'm getting too old for loud parties or wild children!

Also he is a bit of a local celebrity (mid defender football player) more infamous than famous. For not stopping the opposition which allowed them to score an important goal to win against our team In the 1985 League Cup Final, costing us the trophy & title which even now he still gets teased for. Luckily he's a good sport & jokes it off. Once his football career ended he joined our local police force & has just retired earlier this year; hence the moving to the seaside.

We shall miss him. I grew up with his sons & we'd have garden parties & BBQs together & it's all just too sad. Hope the next neighbours are nice.

Edit - Also snooped about his house on rightmove & if his is valued at that kind of money so must our identical house so yay for the future if we ever did sell up! It actually looks brand new & up you can tell a lot of work has been done on it to make it sellable. I want it myself truth be told! Our house is shabby compared to his now & it used to be the other way around!

Wow, 22 years is a long time. We have lived in our house for 20 years and will hopefully be moving next year. It is definitely sad to lose great neighbors, and so scary to wait to see who moves in! I'm scared to leave my great neighbors behind, so it sure works both ways.
I envy them moving to the oceanside, I'd love to do that! Funny about the parties and wild kids lol...I don't want those either!
Sounds like they did some good work on their house...at least maybe you got some ideas for yours. Houses here in Oregon are very expensive, and people expect good upgrades for the price. I'm trying to do some of our upgrading now so we can enjoy it a bit before leaving.
I'm sure you're wondering how long it will take to sell also. I hope you get really great people that buy it...you'll miss your old friends but perhaps make new ones!

Oh I got some ideas but at the moment money is (with all that is going on obviously!) not available for updating our house. Although we are gonna do some smaller jobs like painting of the ceilings & internal doors & woodwork to make it look better.  Can't remember the last time it was done. Which isn't a good sigh!

It is a quiet neighbourhood & compared to the rest of the area the houses are on the more expensive side (not back when we moved in or we couldn't afford to live here! but they have risen to crazy levels over the years) so we usually get older professional couples with not many kids.

In 30 years total there's only been about 15 kids raised here and they all moved out years ago so it's older 50s plus residents.... except me & my partner. We're the youngest (late 30s) on the estate & we're not having kids so no worries there! Most of us moved in not long after the estate was first built and have never left. Just grown older with our houses, and each other. Which is nice in a way. Knowing everyone.

Also felt safer living next door to the police which came in handy 12yrs ago when a thief tried to break into my garage at 1.30 am & I just phoned Dave (next door) and he came straight round in his boxer shorts to arrest the thief. That was an experience!

We're doing the same thing...elbow grease and do-it-ourselves for now. I'm ok with that since I'm not up for anyone coming in yet to work on anything. Sounds like our neighborhoods are quite similar, except that we've recently had a few new people move in with children. The prices are crazy! I'd get excited except for the fact that we'll also have to buy in the crazy market.

That's great to have a policeman next door, but a pretty funny picture of him running over in his boxers! Where did he put his gun?? !
