Grey or not to Grey

#223141 Posted on 2020-05-20 22:33:49

What are the EV-goers opinions on breeding Grey horses?

Do most people avoid them, and why?

Also, has anyone had any luck breeding out grey while still improving conformation?

I personally prefer non-grey horses, because I like to see all the colors! But I don´t refuse a god horse because of the grey gene. And if for some reason a grey gene is annoying me a lot, I buy the credit item to remove it.

In fact, tobiano in mustangs annoys me much more than grey xD

I just started breeding my Arabians for Confo, but all my higher ones seem to carry the greying gene so I might just do two lines, one Gg/GG and one gg.

Also is the no Tobiano in Mustangs just a personal preference? Any other colours people dislike on EV

I like my herds diverse, so I don't really like gray - I have two TB herds and breeding out grey is a really slow process, especially if around 80% of my foundies turn out to be grey (I adopt a lot from RC, so I'm not always able to see the genetics). It's a subject of personal preference, but it's probably the same as in solid Clydes - achieving them is a feat and they're rare, so it's nice to have them :)
I hope to reduce my grey TBs number with time, and introduce some precious other genes to get a colorful herd - however my top priority is still NSS and confo, so so far I pair GGxGG, GgxGg and ggxgg according to conformation and sell a surplus of GG foals. I'm not sure this is the best way to breed it out, but I started with only a few gg horses so I wouldn't like to pair them with GG right away.

I don't discriminate against grey but then I don't sell a lot of horses to other players so it doesn't matter what colour they are as long as they (hopefully) improve their confo & stats & ness with each successive generation.

I like watching my horses grey out over their life span & have a soft spot for my grey Lipizzaners as they are predominantly that in RL. But everyone has their own opinions and you can't please everyone so do what's right for you!

That being said on my main I breed gg to Gg but never will I breed them to GG. And I always keep two GGs together but then I like the grey in some of my herd so again it's not a big issue to me.

@SyLoBe - I just started a small herd of racing Mustangs & I agree with the Tobiano comment.

@Thunder - I wish we could get the Clyde issue sorted. in RL most Clydesdale are solid. I'm lucky I have pre recode lines that were mostly solid back then upon creation so I try to breed  some of it out but not all. I still don't like to discriminate against the poor Sabino's. And I have a soft spot for the white coat ++ sabinos. I feel a bit sorry for them!

I love, love, looooove pretty colors and spend way too much credits on coat randomizers. I don't mind buying a grey horse because I can get rid of G genes.

@ Khatir - I hear you on the sabino clydes. In real life sabino is pretty common in the clydesdale breed, but it shows up as white markings on heads and legs. The way it is displayed on EV is just very unrealistic. I wish it could be fixed...

I don't have an issue with gray but some breeds I do remove it from, normally by using coat randomisers or dna tweak from the credit shop with foundation lines.

About the clydesdales..I used marking applicators to take the sabino off my foundation horses, just could not handle it.

I remove grey from my lines. GG is dominant and it will end up hiding any other colour or pattern. I'm worried about grey overtaking my lines so I use what I call "grey-away" lol. It'd be easy to reintroduce grey later on should I want to, just find a GG and bam, it's back in.

I personally get rid of the grey.. I'm just not a fan of grey, in RL as well... I also don't like splashed white and other "paint" markings in QH. I remove those markings as well..

I think I might try and do two 'lines' of Arabians, one with the GG/Gg genes and the other with the gg. I'm going to keep focusing on Confo, but  few of my higher ones are sadly greying.

Thanks for all the advice and hopefully I can breed it out at some point

@Olympea - Whaaaaaaat can we use marking applicators to get rid of sabino now??? That has to be a recent change because I tried it in the past and it didn't work. I didn't even know this until now.
You made my day, I'm going to spend a ton on MA's and remove all sabino from my lines now XD XD XD
