Who and What? Some Questions!

#220661 Posted on 2020-04-10 21:02:31

Hello! I return from yet another hiatus.

I feel like maybe thinning my herd so would like to ask everyone some things. I am really trying to grasp the economy here what is sought after mostly. I've kinda played willy nilly but want to change that!

1. What do you breed?
2. What discipline(s) do you actively show?
3. Do you sell or stud/brood your horses? If so what's the ballpark range for prices?
4. In your own opinion, which breeds/disciplines are less popular?

If you've any extra to add in terms of questions similar, i would love to know! Any suggestions, tips, etc are totally welcome. Thank you if you read this, and especially if you comment anything!

Welcome back!

1.  I mainly breed paints and qhs.  I have around 150-200 of each on this account that I'm currently in the process of breeding down.  All of them are specialized to western.  I'm breeding them down to (hopefully) around 80 each so I can pull in other breeds I have on spares.  Other I have and will eventually pull in:  Vanners - driving, chincos - sj & driving, tekes - racing, I believe, welshies - driving, appies - sj.  I also think I have some other random breeds (arabs, trakes) scattered in there if I ever get around to them.
2. Western currently, for all my unlocked breeds.
3. Breed twice, sell one foal.  With the new ability to drop non-spec stats, I normally keep the lower of the two, sell the other, unless there's a gene I want.  I can sell ones I want to drop off quickly/don't care as much for (higher nss - 60+) for really cheap 2500-5k.  My better nss and colors have ranged from starting at 15k for plain colors foundation nss, to 60k for nss below 40 on any color.  I've started studding/brooding more too, if I don't want to breed twice, and that ranges from 10k-30k, with higher fees for lower nss/more desirable stats and colors.
4.  Anything with less color.  You can check the town > statistics to get an actual number.  I'd assume anything like clydes, friesians, tekes would be lower due to less colorations/markings.  But it also looks like shetlands, welshies and morgans are low on the list as well. This board is also good if you want to see top specs for the breeds, because sticking with more popular specializations will greatly increase breeding options and people to sell to.

1. What do you breed? ha ha ha..do you really want to know this?
Honestly I am most active with my Gypsy Vanners in Dressage, Show Jumping, Driving. I have recently started morgans in the same disciplines...also lipizzaners and dutch warmbloods in dressage..I have so many breeds though...so many...
2. What discipline(s) do you actively show?
Dressage, Driving, Racing, Show Jumping are probably the most active but I have horses in all disciplines
3. Do you sell or stud/brood your horses? If so what's the ballpark range for prices?
This varies a ton - my driving gypsy vanners sell for anywhere between $50-$120k and my stud prices are anywhere from $35k to $75k. I don't really sell or stud out any other breeds right now. I do not offer my mares for public breeding.
4. In your own opinion, which breeds/disciplines are less popular?
Chincoteague, Morgan, Shetland Ponie, Friesian, Akhal Teke, Clydesdale are probably the ones I see around the least as far as discipline I feel like most are pretty popular but I think endurance is probably one of the least popular as I don't see a ton of people with horses competing in it.

My best advice is to pick whatever breeds you like the most in whatever discipline you like the most. Have all your own lines and be private, buy from others and do lots of breeding from others, or somewhere in between. Just play in whatever fashion is most enjoyable for you despite what other people have to say. Do not feel like you aren't playing the game the right way just because someone else does it differently!

1. What do you breed?
Morgans, Gypsies, Appaloosas. And I own a couple of every other breed for the heck of it.
2. What discipline(s) do you actively show?
All, but I have a hard time finding Endurance and Driving shows in certain grades.
3. Do you sell or stud/brood your horses? If so what's the ballpark range for prices?
I stud most of my stallions out, ranging from $100 - 5000. Depending on stats, confo and unusual color. A few brood out mares on breeds that aren't my main focus.
4. In your own opinion, which breeds/disciplines are less popular?
Because of the showing problem I mentioned, I assume Endurance  and driving is less popular, and western show are always way overcrowded so probably  popular.
And judging by what's in the Rescue center when I go, there is a ton of Qhs, Paints, Minis and Gypsies, not many Lipps, Andalusians, Clyds.

1. What do you breed?
Morgans and Minis

2. What discipline(s) do you actively show?

Endurance. Sometimes certain grades won't get shows though. L5 and R1 was really hard to find one week. N3 has been spotty for the last two weeks.

3. Do you sell or stud/brood your horses? If so what's the ballpark range for prices?

Not yet. They're not up to snub. And they're just foundies. I'm going to sell for likely $2,000 since they're not a popular combo, but you can alway ignore the stats and show any discipline. Stud probably like $800?

4. In your own opinion, which breeds/disciplines are less popular?

Endurance Morgans and Minis are very not popular ;D (Seriously, I just looked and I'm the biggest producer of them. There're less than two full pages of endurance Morgans and Minis)

1. Don't really concentrate on anything atm, I have at least two of every breed apart from morgans, shetlands and chincoteagues.

2. I show for all, that's mainly what I am doing at the moment. I am thinking about only going for certain disciplines and breeds soon though.

3. Nope. I do buy in, but majority of my horses die with me. I do use outside studs and will bring in new lines though.

4. Don't see many good arabians nowadays
