Varnish roan?

#208139 Posted on 2019-08-27 21:54:49

I’ve been trying to breed for varnish roan in my appaloosas and miniature horses, but they have so far, ended up with no pattern. This is fine becaus i breed for this as well, but am i missing a step?

I’ve been careful to select those that are only patn1patn1  patn2patn2 lplp. Sometimes i get one or 2 that are carrying one of these though.

The varnish roan is going to come from LpLp being homozygous dominant. You basically want to eliminate any PATN genes and only breed horses together that are at least Lplp to each other to get a chance of breeding some varnish roan into your lines until you get LpLp foals.

Ah, i thought i needed to avoid LpLp or Lplp.
Looks like i’ll need to re organize my breeding pairs in the future.
Thank you very much @Kate.
