Introducing foundation lines in each generation

#207055 Posted on 2019-08-07 09:48:42

So, I actually used to do this but stopped because it seemed that even pedigrees were more desirable. So what I am thinking I am going to do is each bred horse will have a foundation store mate. This will keep lines clean but lineage won't be even. However I don't think it's possible to find enough of the same generation from outside lines as I would need to keep a good herd going.

Does anyone else do this or something similar? Use foundation mates for bred horses? I don't think it should make the resulting foal less valuable the more I think about it. I think there is a same generation bonus or something when it comes to foal stats but since my main goal has nothing to do with stat gain and more to do with conformation and money/placings earned then I don't think that would affect my horses enough for it to matter to me. I do usually breed my pairing 2x though and sell 1 of the foals, so I'm wondering if this would prevent people from buying foals from me?

I often breed foundations into my lined horses, especially ones that have more common pedigrees, I don't see anything wrong with it personally, I like variety in my lines.

I do too. :)

Perlino is one of my babies who has a Foundation mate; though they're still foals, can hardly wait to see what colors they throw!

Division is another filly I need to find a good mate for; preferably a Foundation with 60+ confo, but that may be difficult.

I breed horses that i buy from others, rescue from the rc, or have bred myself. I do this if i feel their non specialty stats are too high, conformation is too low (more than 2 poors), and i can’t find a mate for them.
I won’t show horses with more than 60 non specialty stats, so i tend to school those with higher non specialty stats.

I do the following pattern to avoid introducing foundation lines in too early (but not running into thinning out my lines):

16 foundation start
-> 8 2nd gen + (8 more foundation)
-> 4 3rd gen, 4 2nd gen + (8 more foundation)
-> 2 4th gen, 2 3rd gen, 4 2nd gen + (8 more foundation)
-> mix the gens and continue adding foundations to add up to 16 every round

A little extreme but it's fun to keep track of. :)

I prefer even pedigrees in my own breedings, but it doesn't stop me from buying mixed pedigrees in other horses.  Sometimes you can find a good pairing between different-generation horses and it's just worth it to go for it!

I'm currently trying to get enough foundation pairs to produce enough foals to begin my second generation in many breeds. I raid the Rescue where possible and pick those with less than 60nss.
I like evenly lined generations, no gaps.
