Chincoteague Pony Roundup!

#204627 Posted on 2019-06-10 17:38:42

My hubby, our 4 month old daughter and I are going to this year's Chincoteague Pony Roundup. I am so excited!! We are going to skip the pony swim this year but we will be checking out the sale ponies. We are going to be at the auction to bid on one! We would LOVE to take home a Riptide baby.

Isn't he gorgeous?!   Photo courtesy of Frame of Mind Photography

I hope *fingers crossed* that our daughter inherits the "horse gene" cause how cool would it be for her to have a Chincoteague Pony of her own, like the famous Misty! We think maybe when she is older, we will go back to Chincoteague to watch the famous pony swim, show her where her pony came from.

Has anyone ever been?

I haven't been before but we have been talking about taking a trip for this in the next couple of years!

Let me know how it all goes, maybe you can give me some tips for our future trip.

Have fun! :)

Oh he's such a cutie. I've never been but always wanted to go. Hopefully that will change soon. Some of my friends have camped on the island and they had a blast. I'm sure y'all will too :)

He’s wonderful!
I’ve never been, but i’ve always dreamed of seeing my very first, real life chincoteague pony.

@Olympea, I will happily report back on our experience!   :)

@Bel, Chincoteague is gorgeous as well as Assateague. If you ever get the opportunity to just visit, it will be worth it!

@Wild Horse Cavern, Thank you! We are in love. Chincoteagues seem to have very nice, trainable personalities. They look a bit scrub in the wild but all the ones I have seen get adopted sure clean up nice!

Hubby and I found this AWESOME Chincoteague Pony pedigree site and so we have been "spying" on this year's crop of foals. They are all soooo cute, I don't know how we will choose! These are some of our favorites so far:
(links do inlclude pics!!)

Randy 2019 by Surfer's Riptide (aka Riptide)
Seaside Miracle 2019 by Tornado's Legacy
Witchkraft 2019 by Wild Thing
Kachina Grand Star 2019 by Effie's Papa Bear
Catwalk Chaos 2019 by Tornado's Prince Of Tides
Dreamer's Gift 2019 by Archer's Gambit (or Ajax)

What do you guys think? We like many others but these are just some of our favs!   ❤

Thanks for the responses, Windspun and Indigo. We are super excited!! Our favorite is Riptide's colt out of Randy.

We were kicking around names for him (not that it is a guarentee that we will get him) and we really like Blue Moon Riptide. The colt's grandmother on dam's side is named "April Moon", plus our daughter's nickname is Blue Moon. And of course Riptide comes from the sire's name.

Blue Moon Riptide    ❤

We are not sure of a barn name though and are still not 100% set on Blue Moon Riptide as a registered name. Anyone have any name ideas?

Link to baby pics of our favorite colt.

Oh my goodness, so we leave for Chincoteague Island tomorrow! We have our round pen already set up for our new baby. We washed our horse trailer. Everything is packed. So excited!

Hubby and I looked over all the foals born before June and have come up with a top 15 list of which babies we like best and also some that also liked just not as much as the first 15. These are our top 5!

1. Randy's (smoky) Black Tobiano colt by Riptide
2. Seaside Miracle's Bay Tobiano colt by Tornado's Legacy
3. Catwalk Chaos' Chestnut Tobiano colt by Tornado's Prince Of Tides
4. Dreamer's Gift's Chestnut Tobiano filly by Archer's Gambit (alternate sire: Ajax)
5. Witchkraft's Extensive Chestnut Tobiano colt by Wild Thing

We are going to skip the Pony Swim this year. We have a 6 month old and I am not comfortable bringing her around 50,000 people in one place. Our hope is that when she is older, we can come back and watch the Pony Swim so she can see where her "Misty" came from.

*fingers crossed*  That we come home with a new baby Chincoteague Pony!  ♥

I've never gone for the roundup, but I've been to the island to visit for the day while in the area twice!  One day I'm going for the roundup and bidding on a pony! c:

Thanks all for the responses and well-wishes but twas not meant to be.  :(

This year's auction set a new record for amount of money earned, over $270,000 for about 50 ponies, averaging $4,700 per pony. Now that does include buybacks which always sell for the most money because people can use them as a tax write off. So, I think the average for take-home ponies was around $3,000. Which is twice what we were looking to spend. Which is really unfortunate as we were the ONLY people who brought a horse trailer so who knows how everyone else is getting their ponies home that they spent an arm and a leg on. It really bites but I guess a Chincoteague Pony just wasn't in our stars...

I DID get to see Riptide up close though! He is stunning! Here are some pictures I took of Riptide and the ponies in holding after the swim.

Fun fact!
Our tip 5 picks sold for:
1. Randy's colt for $4,800
2. Seaside Miracle's colt, NEVER SAW HIM   :(   (passed away?)
3. Catwalk Chaos' colt for $3,900
4. Dreamer's Gift's filly for $4,500
5. Witchkraft's colt for $1,800   (we might have been able to get him but wasn't sure who he was until he was sold as we couldn't see him because the handlers are always in the way)

Wow Riptide is gorgeous! Shame you weren't able to get one :( Maybe next year you could try again and you may end up with a chincoteague pony. Who knows! Hope you had a great day there either way! :)
