When to show and breeding question

#201945 Posted on 2019-04-04 06:35:44

I’m new and I’ve read it’s safer to do the horse school since your horse will always win some money and stats, but how do you know when a horse is ready to show and when it can actually stand a chance in the show ring? Is it worth showing foundation horses? If the show doesn’t have five horses I know the horse won’t get stats but can it still earn the show money? Also, I know this is unrelated but I read the market has been awful for selling horses so is it even worth it to breed to sell or no?

A lot of people wait to show their horse until they are in the top up of their grade level, so with a foundation it would be close to 150 stats. Many people show 10-15 stats away from the next grade level. Then there are people that just show everyday...it can take some time to decide what works best for you.

Foundation horses tend to do pretty well in shows. One thing I do suggest is ensuring you have a full set of tack that is fully upgraded.

As far as breeding it depends on the breed, discipline, and what people are looking for at that particular time. It is always a gamble but sometimes one that pays off. So it is really up to you if you want to give it a shot breeding horses to specifically sell then you can go for that or if you would rather just only breed once for yourself then you can do that.

Sorry if this was not helpful but it really is kind of a personal preference thing and not everyone does things exactly the same.

As olympea said, foundations tend to do pretty well in shows and most people show within <20 stats away from the next level. At the moment I'm working on foundation show horses to offer for sale and brood, and I've been showing them every day, which has gone pretty well. I tend to have ups and downs with show earnings on a given day but I usually make at least some profit. More advice I'd offer is make sure to train horses every day to help with shows, and make sure their non-specialty stats are relatively low. I find that horses with <55-58 nss do well.

I've been showing daily with a huge herd of foundations myself. They seem to do well enough indeed. I've a 4 year old who's already reached Novice 4 in her disipline which is a lot of stats, since i made her as a 3 year old from the Equine Center!
