Are my breeding goals good?

#197401 Posted on 2018-12-18 07:39:09

I know the horse market inst great but I sometimes doubt my breeding goals are good and maybe they should be changed. Anyone willing to offer some advice of ways to improve?

Paints - Western
Completely foundation lines, I dont mine about coat colours or patterns (I only have bays and chestnut)

Appaloosas - Western
Completely foundation lines, I dont mine about coat colours or patterns (Most of my current herd are cream)

GV - Driving
Mix of foundation and lines, mostly lined now, all horses are Crcr or CrCr

Trakes - Jumping
Mix of foundation and lined, all horses are ee - so chestnut, palomino or cremello (Most of the current herd are palomino)

**EDIT**

Cpuld you please tell me what most people look for in these breeds as well? Like what is most sought after?

Thank you! :)

One thing I noticed was that your non-discipline stats are a bit all over the place.  Some of your horses are perfectly fine, at foundation levels or (some of the Trakes) lower, but a few are on the high side.  Not everyone cares about non-discipline stats, but it definitely helps sales, because there are plenty who will not buy a horse that has high non-disciplines.

From what I've seen, you are using the right treats for your horses, so that makes sure that those nd stats don't get any higher, which is good.  Those stats will breed down slowly over time, or you can seek out stock that is already low.

Beyond that, rare colors sell better than common ones (creams, champagnes, duns, silvers, flaxens, and pangares) and some people are picky about patterns.  Sabino doesn't seem to be very popular in particular, and neither is few spot (avoid Pattern 1 in Appaloosas and other breeds that have those genetics.)

You've got popular disciplines for your breeds, too, so that is good.

Your prices are reasonable from one standpoint, and the horses should be worth that much (particularly the ones with good nd stats) but the facts of the market are that they are not priced to move.  That's a decision you'll have to come to - how much you are willing to adjust your prices to make them sell, or if you are willing to wait longer for the higher price.  I, personally, have to sell a lot of horses (on another account) due to my current breeding experiments producing a high volume of foals, so I've had to lower my prices, or my experiments would grind to a halt due to lack of space on my accounts.  It's a buyer's market right now, unfortunately (at least for your breed/disciplines.)

Thank you!

I am working hard to lower my non spec stats and am slowly getting there (finally), I am also in the middle of adjusting my pricing system.
