Breeding chestnut friesians.

#191743 Posted on 2018-10-17 19:23:34

Hello everyone. I’m starting to breed for chestnut friesians, and I am confused about the chestnut gene in friesians.
I have 2 chestnut mares that are ee aa. Does this mean they will never offer chestnut foals in the future?
If i paired them with black friesians, what would i need to look for in order to breed chestnut foals?

ee aa is chestnut.
pairing them with an EE horse, you would have a 100% chance of getting an Ee horse, or a black friesian.
pairing them with an Ee horse, you would have a 50% at ee - chestnut, and 50% Ee - black.
pairing them with an ee horse, you would have a 100% chance of getting an ee horse, or a chestnut friesian.

So the 'better option' would be to breed to a ee friesian, then a Ee, then an EE for the best chance of sticking to 'chestnut' lines.

Basically all you need to look at is the extension gene, the EE/Ee/ee one. Chestnut horses have the recessive ee, and black ones either carry the recessive gene and are Ee, or don't carry it and are EE.

To get a chestnut foal with one parent chestnut, and one black, you need to be sure the black horse has the Ee gene. It's impossible to get a chestnut foal if the black horse's genes are EE (you'd simply get a black foal that carries the gene, and is Ee).

So when you're looking to pair up your chestnut horse, you can either breed to another chestnut, which guarantees a chestnut foal, or find a Ee black horse. With that pairing, you'll have a 50% chance of getting a chestnut foal and a 50% chance of getting a Ee black horse. There's a punnet square in the genetics section of the help that shows how you figure that out, if you're not familiar already.
