Starting to Line Breed

#190952 Posted on 2018-10-06 09:57:30

Hi, I'm in the middle of breeding my Morgans and thinking of breeding 2 sets of each pair so 1 male and 1 female of each pairing and was wondering if anyone else has done this and their thoughts, the pro's and cons. I'm very new to the breed aspect of EQ so any tips and pointers would be appreciated.

I dont quite follow. Are you saying breed X and Y and then have a filly and a colt from X and Y then breed the siblings together?

No breed X and Y and colt and filly from the union get put into 2 different lines where they and their offspring wont be connected at all. So if I have 32 horses starting my line, normally would only lead to 16 then 8, 4, 2 and then 1. I'm thinking of 2 different lines starting off with the original foundies.

I think I understand what you are saying. I don't have an experience with it myself. Also you have to take into consideration you may not always get the sex you are looking for when you breed. I don't see why it wouldn't work out well though if that's what you decide to do.

In my own personal experience unless you plan on using Credit items to get the  1 male 1 female foal from each original planned breeding pair it just wont happen!

I breed upwards of 20 foals every 3 weeks or so on my main acct & I can honestly say I will get something like 14 colts & 6 fillies or 16 colts & 4 fillies. Either way I Can never match up the genders easily. I always get more colts than fillies. It never fails! So I wish you every success in this endeavour :)

Also every 3rd generation or so from your original lines start another Foundie line (at least half the size of the original 1st line) so you will keep having fresh lines to run in to your longer lined horses so you dont run into an inbreeding problem. Of course you can buy other players lines & breed to outside stallions to also help with this but this too will eventually lead to its own problem of having a lot of horses related to each other as my other accts Trakehner herd will testify too!!

This is what I am doing as well! I only have foundation lines. I keep buying more though, so my stallion/mare ratio is WAY off right now in each breed lol! I figure I can train to 19 and hold them in a locked division until I have a proper mate for them :)
