Moreno Colour

#176215 Posted on 2018-06-25 16:46:01

So I have a Chincoteague who is Moreno coloured… How do I breed for that colour? I've tried in the past when I had one once, but it failed to carry... Anyone able to help with the genetics here? Also would two Moreno's being bred together increase my chances of getting another one? I'd like to breed a herd of moreno and grullo horses.
I know grullo is a black dun so I can work that out easily enough...

Seal Brown (AtA) plus 2 Cream Genes

What Kimtia said! So yes, breeding two morenos together will be much more likely to give you another moreno, since you'll always get the two cream genes and there will be at least the possibility of the foal inheriting the brown base.

It is also possible to get either a cremello or a smoky cream from two morenos, depending on the exact genes of the horses you're breeding. Cremello is double cream on a chestnut base (so if the foal inherited an "ee" genotype) and smoky cream is double cream over black (so if the foal inherited the black gene, either "EE" or "Ee", but inherited "aa" as well.)
