Breeding for Color HELP!!!

#175132 Posted on 2018-06-17 15:08:05

Hi, I'm presently trying to breed Morgans and want to breed certain colors: silver grullo(Eternal Grace) and flaxen red dun(Sovereign). Any advise or tips from the professional breeders would be much appreciated.

Silver grullos are the easier of those two colors to breed.

In order to be guaranteed a silver grullo foal, you'll need to breed Eternal Grace to either a black stallion, a grullo stallion, a silver black stallion, or another silver grullo stallion. Since she is ZZ silver, in order to reproduce her color exactly every time, you'll need a stallion that also is ZZ silver (as well as 'aa'). If you breed her to a black stallion without silver you'll get foals that look like this horse (not that it has a black mane and tail rather than a silver one).

In order to guarantee a flaxen red dun foal, you'll need to breed Sovereign to a flaxen mare (with either a chestnut or a red dun). Flaxen is recessive (unlike dun and silver) so in order for it to show up a. horse needs to have a chestnut base and be ff (not just Ff)
