Home page editing

can anyone give me some advise of how to create amazing home pages with images etc, some members have great home pages but I have no idea about coding on here. Do I need to edit offline then add them and do they need to be of a certain size etc? I read about the BBcode but it seems a like a lot of work which I don't really understand.

You can use this free layout generator to create a HTML layout if you like. You can use your own images, or some of the ones provided there. Is this the type of layout you meant?

Most people with complicated designs that have pictures and scroll boxes actually have them coded in html (which is a lot of work to learn). 

People who don't know how to code typically save some money and buy them from people who know how to code (you have to offer a substantial amount of money (EVD/EVC) to get something really nice). My layout cost 20 EVC (though the artist was willing to take 14 EVC; I paid what I had offered in my advertisement post). If you were buying one with EVD I'd think you'd offer at least 2.5 mill. 

Most of the time the image is made first and then the coding is added and tested on an html testing side (I would suggest not testing on EV until you had something working on a testing site, sometimes broken code will mess with EVs own coding and cause the player some issues if this does happen you can reset your homepage so it's not the biggest problem. 

If you are going to buy a layout you can choose to purchase the whole thing (like I did), you can buy the image and do the coding yourself, you can create the image yourself and have it coded, or you can purchase the image and hire a coder to do the coding for you. The image is typically the cheaper part of the equation. 

image sizes vary depending on the layout (how much it covers and how big you want your homepage to be).

Html is not the easiest thing to learn (I have a rudimentary understanding of how to code in html, but I still like to purchase my layouts) but it can be done. c:

this is a pretty awesome thing UlyssesBlue created a long time ago, that will get you a nice looking layout for your page. a note: you can no longer use the image of an EV horse in the layout.

I've updated my home page but I would be interested to know how to change to colours and text for the bottom half of the page. 

You can't, not with Ulysses layout. Other people can code that in, but my knowledge of coding mostly is in inserting pictures and changing text. ;)

You use CSS coding to modify the EV part of the page, and you use element class names, etc, to apply changes to certain parts of the page. To figure out what those class names are you either read through the page's source code or use developer tools that can be found in most browsers. You can find more information and tutorials here. This code can be inserted above the code for your existing layout. As a simple example it may look something like this:
