*Testing Genotype on horses for sale

#169803 Posted on 2018-05-08 14:05:49

I don't know about y'all, but nothing is more frustrating for me than buying a horse that has not had their genotype tested, only to test it once I buy it, and finding out that it carries a very undesirable gene.

What if, if a horse is for sale, a potential buyer could have the option of testing genotype before buying?

I'm thinking this feature would only be available on horses that are listed as for sale.

I also beleive this could happen in real life too, so it wouldn't be unrealistic.

You can already check the genotype of horses listed for sell (even if they've not had their genotype revealed) using the horse search function.

all the DD horses for sell on EV

you can also run specific horses through using their name and checking whatever gene(s) you're interested in using this method I know that this horse is ee AA gg Crcr DD FF zz RnT

no longer holds true with the update. changed my vote to support c:

Support. I see nothing wrong with this if you (and not the owner) are the one paying the genotype fee. I see no reason to restrict it to horses for sale though. Stud or brood would be useful as well. Or for simplicity it could be an option on any untested horse. If the latter, then I can imagine people will genotype test horses they are simply curious about, or perhaps as a small charity act for players without much funds.

What if Player A put beautiful horses up for sale, just so they could see the genotype once another (potentially poorer) player had revealed it, so that Player A didn't have to spend the money? I could see this leading to an overflow of the market with players scamming people (e.g. the player is not even thinking of selling the horse, just wants a free genotype reveal). I know that 1k isn't that much to pay but it only takes a few players with lots of horses to start messing with people. I also agree with Aglet's point :)

Ooooh Io thats an evil little thought! Surely no one would dream of such a thing... although now its out there they probably would!

Im on the fence here. I can see both the good & bad.

Perhaps if the horse was then removed from sale by the owner (if they were scamming) the player that revealed the genotype could get a refund.... although this too could be open to abuse. Urgh I dunno how to vote!

I think to avoid abuse of the system the genotype would only be revealed to the specific potential buyer who requested it. Or maybe there could be a button (for horses for sale and stud/brood) for requesting genotype that the current owner then pays for? It would be nice to have a simpler way to find out what a horses genotype was without having to run through search a couple times.

^ Having the revealed genotype only viewable to the person who pays for this testing could effectively prevent the system from being abused. However I'm not convinced such abuse would be sufficiently widespread enough to justify complicating the system like this.

My preference is for the simplest version: a button to genetically test any untested horse, regardless of owner, or status for sale, stud, brood, unavailable, etc, where the testing is charged to the person pressing the button, not the owner. The person doing the testing would have to weigh up whether they considered it worthwhile, rather than have any checks and balances in place to prevent the system from being abused.

The most recent update makes it so horses without genotype testing done will not show up when looking for specific genes. Hopefully this encourages more people to reveal genotypes on horses!  *fingers crossed*

Supported this topic as well! There really is NO reason for owners to not genotest their own horse though. If you cry about spending $1k on a horse because it is too expensive or whatever, then you probably have too many horses..... just my opinion though.

I would really, really like to be able to gene test RC horses too.

I like UB's idea of allowing you to test any horse regardless of ownership.

I would love to test RC horses :D sometimes idk if it's a gray, especially the foals :( Also, maybe if the owner puts a horse up for sale to get a free gene test, if they take it off the market it disappears or smth? or it's not visible to the owner? idk, neither of those would really work...

I think this could be good but so nobody is using it to scam, I think instead of completely revealing genotype, you could temporarily reveal genotype for say 500 evd (half price), and the genotype is only revealed for the duration you are looking at the horse. If you decide to buy it, you will have to pay full price to reveal it again. If you decide not to buy, nothing changes and the next person can reveal again. The owner of the horse will not be given the option to reveal genotype when the horse is listed. That way there is no way for anybody to scam.
