If a horse's pedigree is like this is it a second or third generation horse?

I'm pretty sure it's a third gen horse :)

I'd call it a second gen because the birth stats are more in line with those of a second gen horse.

it's a third gen.
when determining generation, you use the longer side to determine what to call it.

in the public notes of some of my longer lined horses, (for example) i'll make a note that their mother was a foundation, as was their paternal grandfather, even though their paternal grandmother might have had very long lines. i find making a note of lines that have been "refreshed" by the infusion of foundation blood seems to draw in more requests for studs/broods than justing listing that they are "multi-gen". people seem to prefer shorter lines overall, and adding foundies does that, but doing so doesn't (unfortunately :P) make a horse second gen.

i'd agree with kahzie on that, typically when i sell foal like that i let people know it's a 2nd gen x foundation foal.

i was thinking more for personal breeding (i'd have paired it with a 2nd gen, so in my naming system it'd have been labeled as a 2nd gen). i wasn't thinking in terms of selling it. c:

in terms of selling i feel you can't call it a third gen or a second gen, because it isn't either. it doesn't have the allure of a 2nd gen with the very short pedigree but it also doesn't have the stat advantage of being a full-fledged third gen either.

Thank you all for the help! I think I'll go ahead and call it 3rd gen then ;P
