Forbidden Fruits/Treats?

It's been preached around wholeheartedly from what I've seen that treats such as sugar cubes, peppermints, and hay cubes are not to be given to horses whom you wish to show, because they in turn make showing the horse impossible. If that is the case, what are their uses exactly? Do they have a use?

Are you sure that you cant give them to horses you are going to show? I gave peppermints to all my horses, and I could still show them.

They are good at raising stats quickly, if you don't intend to show your horse.

It was stated to me by a few top players that peppermints, sugar cubes, and hay cubes mess up the stats of the horse, making it near impossible for them to win shows after they've been given those kinds of treats. The only treats they should be given are the ones that correspond with their specialty (so western horses should only be given green apples and carrots, etc.).

Of course you can still show your horse after using those treats.
