Coat Color Swatches: Artist Guide

#132164 Posted on 2017-12-07 15:08:24

If you have any suggestions that you would like me to cover, please let me know!

While I did not explore all color shades and their variants right away, I wanted to begin touching on the basics. That being sorrel/chestnut, black, and bay. As outlined in the image, keep in mind that your light source type (and location/intensity) will affect the high-/low-lights.

I have found a more realistic effect by using various tones of the base coat (typically chosen with the eye dropper tool and a photograph), as opposed to black and white. Previously I used black and white, altering the opacity and brush/layer settings (multiply, overlay, etc). Of course, you can use more variations in tone than I depicted here. Deep down inside, I was never happy with the result using the methods previously described. As I progressed, I found the happier medium using different shades -- it helped create more depth and a more realistic feel. Additionally, I never used "flat black" for the base coat in any of my drawings. If you haven't noticed, many times they often look like black blobs, which is hard to use to create depth with (especially regarding shadows).

Part of the fun in art is finding what works for you. I will continue this and create more with other colors. My goal is to help another artist along, by helping them improve their skillset. I miss helping other artists, so I'm going back to creating some tutorials.

Feel free to use the swatches, but the artwork is not up for grabs. Full view More to come!

Got around to fiddling with black, +cream. I still have Champagne, Pearl, Dun, and Silver to explore. If I feel froggy I may include a version for pinto patterns, basic markings, and Leopard.
