When I go to  the NEWS button and click on it I get Archives and Polls, but no event button to click on. So I don't know how many leaves I have.

The Fall Leaves event has ended. Your leaves will be stored until next year, when you will be able to buy things with them from an event shop, but until the next event, there will be no "Event" to click on.
