Adopt~Character

What's the difference between an adopt and a character (in art)? Ty!

I have always understood them to be the nearly same thing, except characters could potentially have more of a "storyline" or "personality" to them and tend to be more unique. Adopts are usually a number of pieces on the same lines but with different designs. I am no expert, this is just how I understand those words when I see them.
