need Foundation breeding advice

#127201 Posted on 2017-11-07 06:41:35

Hello!

Im in need of some advice.

I currently have in total 40 foundation akhal tekes which im planning to breed for color - dressage stats - conformation.

Down the line my horses pedigree will have no "foundation horse" showing anymore and while they are all gonna be unrelated im not sure how to introduce new "unbred" blood.

Ive read that lined x foundation breedings seem to lower a bit the foal stats (if im mistaken correct me please!)

Only solution i can think for the moment would be to lock the 1 foal resulted of breeding all 40 horses and start again? to get another unrelated horse to breed that first foal?

what are your strategies? any advice?

Thank you!

Bringing in foundations later will drop the foal stats slightly,  but personally I am willing to deal with the dip to ensure clean (not overbred or inbred) new blood is introduced to my lines.

Your locking idea would work, but the foal stats will still be slightly lower -assuming you train, treat, school and show each generation, the stats will be higher every generation, so those second generation locked foals will still lower the stats when paired with horses from further generations.

so I had the same question. Say I have

Aries X Libra = Amber

then the way I understand it is you breed Amber to a foundation, then that foal to a foundation. so on and so forth to keep your line clean.

or is it breed Amber to a lined horse, then that foal to a foundie or a lined it wouldn't matter?

I generally try to keep my horses bred to like generations to keep the pedigRees even and the horses moving at the same pace.

What I'm in the process of doing right is raising multiple foundation herds that will turn into second gen herds (and be half the size as the original foundation herd).  The second gen herd will probably be kept exclusive until it's third gen, then be pooled with the other third gen horses I have to continue breeding with them.  When the horse gets to the point I know I won't have something to match (around 5th gen) I'll either lock it and wait until I do, or down breed it to a 4th gen.

I don't like breeding long gems (4-5 gen) to foundation because I don't like taking the stat hit, but it's not a completely terrible option if it's between doing that or picking a bad stud.  Some of my horses are split generations because it was all I had available at the time.

ok something I just thought about. and this may be a stupid question, but how do you count generations?

say in breeding 2 foundations are they first gen or is the foal the first gen?

would be so neat if in pedigrees we could have a little note saying if its "inbred" or not, going back all the gens, even the ones not shown in the pedigree.

saying warlock, i noticed is in many andalusian pedigrees but by going manually over the horses not shown in my horse pedigree i can actually find that warlock appears much more times than the ones shown in my horse pedigree or even if he does not appear in my horse line i actually find he appears several times before the Great-Great-Great Grand-Parents xD

makes it a pain to find unrelated lines :S :S

I will probably do as  Nittrous but its always neat to read others opinions

@Ragnarok
Technically, the inbreeding calculate thing is supposed to do that (or at least I imagine it's supposed to) but I haven't really tested it much.

My two main breeds - paints and qhs - are pretty inbred so I spend a lot of time looking at a pedigree, finding a horse I recognize and know is inbred, and ignoring the horse from then on.  There are like 5-6 I recognize in each breed to keep it as simple as possible to find the inbreeding.  It's hard when some studs have 50+ foals to their name, and 30+ to half of its kids.  It makes it almost a necessity to have your own lines or collaborate with other breeders.

I know the inbreeding calculator does not allow "close" relation horses but im not sure if it works by checking horses that do not show in our own horses pedigree if they have 5 gens or more.

Im starting my own lines of appaloosas and quarter horses. Will possibly go for Andalusians as well.

The inbreeding calculator only takes blocked pairings into consideration. My cousin pair turns out “everything’s fine”.
