Update 9/23 - Miniature Kimtias

#121358 Posted on 2017-09-12 16:41:47

So as many of you were aware, I was pregnant with twins. And yes, past tense, was.

I went to the doctors office on Friday and we discovered one of my twins, baby A, had not grown at all in 2 weeks, while baby B had gained a pound in 2 weeks. I was diagnosed with Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome. This is where 1 twin is getting all of the nutrients and not allowing the other twin to get any at all. Needless to say was whisked away and had an emergency premature C Section a couple of hours later.

**********************

Anthony Thomas was born at 8:31pm on September 8th at 4lbs, 14 oz with a collapsed lung. He had 2 blood transfusions and was on oxygen. He, rather quickly in my opinion, recovered and is no longer on oxygen and I was able to give him his first bottle of formula this morning.

The first time I got to hold Anthony
No more Oxygen!!

*********************

Michael Thomas was born at 8:33pm on September 8th at 7lbs 12 oz. He is having trouble adjusting to life on the outside and was breathing very rapidly. He is starting to catch on and his breathing is slowing down, but not enough to get off of the oxygen completely. He will have a feeding tube in, until he is no longer on oxygen.

The first time we got to hold Michael
Sleepy Sleepy

**********************

**********************

I am officially discharged from the hospital on strict orders of no lifting/pulling/pushing, no driving, and on heavy pain meds. Both Anthony and Michael are in the NICU as they were born prematurely. There is no date of when they can come home, as it all depends on how they do. They need to both be feeding well (Michael cannot yet as he's still on oxygen) and they both need to be able to maintain their own body temperatures.

September 15th Update-

I called for an update this morning. Both of the boys ate their full breakfast this morning.

Michael was moved out of the isolets and into a crib!! his oxygen was also turned off, so he's breathing room air and so far so good!

Anthony is still in his Isolet, but they're anticipating moving him to a crib in the next couple of hours!!

In order to go home, they need to be doing well in a crib for a couple of days (2 i believe) and pass a car seat challenge. The car seat challenge is where they spend an hour and a half strapped in a car seat with monitors on, and none of the values can drop too low.

We're almost home!!

September 18th Update-

Yesterday was very very busy for the mini Kimtias. Little Anthony spent an hour and a half in his car seat in the hospital in order to pass his car seat challenge. None of the monitors showed any stress of him being in a different position. The car seat challenge was the only thing stopping Anthony from coming home which means....

Anthony is home!!!

Car Ride!

Elvis was the first to discover the new addition. He was at the crib sniffing between the bars and then settled down on my bed (which is next to the crib) and laid there watching him. Ever the protector.

Merida was the second to discover Anthony. She is very very interested in him, but not in a bad way. She kept sniffing him and trying to boop him lightly with her paw. She would watch and sniff him for about 5-10 minutes, leave, and then come back to watch/sniff him again.

Shortly after Merida, Ariel discovered Anthony. She is not as interested in him as Merida was. Ariel sniffed him for about 5 minutes and then walked away. I haven't seen her interested in him since.

Bruce didn't discover Anthony until this afternoon. He's kind of a dufus, so I'm not surprised. He's all in all confused. he has no idea what to make of Anthony.

*************

Michael is still in the nicu. He is off of oxygen again, and is taking more and more of his feeds. I'm unable to visit him today as someone now has to stay home with Anthony, but my husband is going up to visit him. After Michael gains some weight and is taking all of his feedings, he can try his hand at the car seat challenge and come home too. I think Anthony misses him.

September 23rd Update-

Michael came home yesterday!!

Both boys are reunited. :)

Anthony is on the left, Michael is on the right. This really shows the size difference between the 2. :)

Congratulations on your baby boys! You are a strong, brave mama with two tough little fighters! The NICU is no picnic (my first did almost 2 weeks in there even though she was full term due to not liking breathing air!), but in a few years it will be a distant memory, and when those two strong boys are running you ragged, you won't believe they were ever tiny and helpless and hooked up to machines! Promise! Congratulations again and your family will be in my prayers!!

Thanks everyone!

I called for an update today, and Michael is probably going to be in a crib faster then his brother. They also turned his Oxygen level down to 2L from the 4L it was at. Anthony is eating well and they're slowly turning the incubator's temperature down too, but not quite as fast as Michael's. :)

I'm heading down to see them soon!! :)

Congrats on your adorable twin boys! Super cute! Glad they're doing alright, despite everything that went on! I hope you begin feeling better and that the boys treatment continues as great as it is going so far!
So happy for you :)

Thank you for the update, been thinking lots about you guys! Oh man, I remember the carseat challenge! It was the longest 90 minutes ever! They may also require you to take an infant CPR class, which is really good stuff to know even if you never have to use it.

We have a bunch of videos we need to watch and infant CPR is one of them. Ironically enough we already learned infant CPR in one of my birthing classes, but better twice then not at all. ;D

Michael had to go back on Oxygen. He was struggling a little. But they're both in cribs!

Wow they're doing so well! My friends twins (now 2 yrs old) were preemies and in NICU for a couple months before they got to go home.

I'm very excited they're doing so well. :)

I know a couple of other premmies that were in for weeks/months. My cousin's son was in for 6 weeks and he was a singleton.

I updated the original post ;D
