Pricing Horses

#116084 Posted on 2017-07-30 22:41:41

How do y'all do this? I need a bit of help because my horses have been hard to sell at the 75x the stats = Price rule. :/

How much lower should I be lowering the prices? What would you price my horses at? How did you estimate/create this price? I only sold one of those horses using the 75x method, and I think only because it was exactly what they were looking for because of the name they gave it later.

Then there also does seem to be two types of horses for sale around here in my mind: Those which are cheaper and usually foundies which weren't working out for them or 2nd gen, and easily more accessible to new players. Then there are those which are $5,000-$95,000 and more for older/wealthy players. Does the stats/conformation/color/pedigree affect who I should be marketing to?

There are many factors that make up the price of a horse.
Stats, base stats, pedigree, color, conformation, etc...
A lot of more experienced ("wealthy") players will only buy a horse if it very specifically fits their breeding programs.
Also, with horses gaining stats more easily, foals that used to have good birth stats are now considered only average or even of lower quality.
I used to be pleased if a 2nd generation foal was born with 350 stats. Now I'm getting 2nd generation foals with 500+ stats and a 350 stat foal is a disappointment.

I used to charge stats x 100 + a bonus fee for special colors, but since the recode I'm finding it hard to sell a "good" horse. The only horses that sell quickly and for a good price are the ones with great stats and rare colors.
In the months that I have been paying I made a good price on a solid colored clydesdale and a chestnut friesian.
All my other foals just sat there in my sales division for weeks before they eventually sold, and for a lower price than I wanted for them. I even gave a 900 stat friesian mare that just will not sell...
And I'm under the impression that many players are having a hard time selling their foals.

As for your horses, personally I wouldn't buy them because there are some problems with them.
Both of them are gray, which is an undesirable color. I personally cull all gray horses from my herd and a lot of players avoid them like the plague.

For having an extended pedigree, you arabian has quite low stats, and has 74 surplus stats. That means he won't do very well in show, and most players are looking for horses with less then 60 or even 50 surplus stats.

Your welsh pony has okay conformation for a foundation, but again, his stats are pretty low for a 6 year old. I have 4 year old store ponies that have higher stats than him.

From my experience, only top quality horses sell for good money and go to good breeding homes.
Start with good breeding stock, keep in mind all the different factors that make up the quality of a horse, be patient, and try making money off other game features such as the fountain, playing games, and putting all your money into the bank to get maximum interest.

Personally I've been leaving off buying foals/horses if I don't have a horse to pair them with. If I am looking for a horse to pair with, I'm picky about what I buy unless I'm desperate/tired of looking for something. I can barely handle caring for what I have and the excess stock that's sitting in my sales division currently. (Did just put a bid on your Friesian Feline, for some reason I thought she was a pedigreed Friesian which is what I've been avoiding, shame she wasn't born earlier for my now deceased friesian).

Lately I've been pricing around the base stat x 1k rather than the birth stat x 1k, especially since I have a lot of low generation horses but still decent stats. The only exceptions to this is if it's an uncommon colour or it has very low non speciality stats.

I just end up pricing my horses with the (stats x 100)/2 formula while adding or taking a bit based on other factors. The reason I do this is because horses can be rather hard to sell, people can be really picky. Sometimes it takes a couple weeks until you get a bite.
You have to be caredul with nonspecialty stats and pedigree because those seem to be two main concerns in sales. I don't understand the pedigree obsession but sometimes you just gotta go with it. No inbreeding or overbreeding your horses if you plan on selling them.

I think advertising sales also helps, sometimes I won't get any sales until I've updated my sales post and bumped it, not everyone searches the horse search unless they're looking for something.

Thank you Feline!! That was very, very helpful. :)

RemRem, thanks! I'll probably be lowering the cost on both severely, as Feline pointed out they do have quite a few factors going against them. XP

Maple, thanks for the input! I have advertised them too. ^^' It doesn't help that the Welsh Pony club isn't very active though ... But hey, I sold one of them through that method!
