Naming Theme Ideas?

#112782 Posted on 2017-07-04 20:21:08

I like to name my horses on themes and I'm trying to think of one.

I was doing a bit of research and decided to rename my Trakehners to be more realistic. Basically the registry rules are all horses have to be named with the first letter of their name matching their dam's. So a foal out of a mare named Sally has to have a name starting with S. They don't allow farm initials in front, but they do allow them behind the name. So they could name her "Sally BBT" if their farm was Big Beautiful Trakehners or something.

Most Trakehners seem to have one word names (maybe with initials) such as Abdullah (of the mare Abiza), Peron (out of Peru), etc.

So with that in mind, I tweaked my name a bit to be Bright Field Stables (instead of Brighthawk) and I'm planning to put BrF at the end of my horse's names (while they're own by me anyway).

I'd love to have a naming them that's somewhat unusual, but not overly complicated. I don't want to name them after, say, Pokemon. I'd prefer something kind of serious and realistic.

Anyone got any ideas?

I'm using several themes for my horses. I've used greek mythology, Egyptian mythology, Norse mythology, planets, stars, flowers(the scientific names) and have thought about using the names of poisons. Also was going to name a line after state forests in the US, but none really sounded good to me.

I do like passing on names to foals, so I do use websites to pair words together.

hmm, I'm on a city kick personally (thoroughbreds name after euro cities) so perhaps Australian cities or Asian cities to provide spice.

I also have scientific tree names, scientific dino names and, my personal favorite, WWII bomber names going right now

Those are some good themes!

Right now, I'm playing around with "unique baby names" basically, like Maddox, Tanis, etc. I'm trying to sort of picture it being yelled in the arena and going "that doesn't sound too bad!" lol~!

I tend to go with whatever hits my fancy. :)

Though with my Mustangs, they're firmly Native American names mostly, as they're a native breed here (for several hundred years anyway!). Though a few are and are going to be named after popular Mustangs that live out in the west nowadays; such as Cloud.

Friesians, I'm going with Swahili names, as I love The Lion King so much, and the African culture it's based off of.

Gypsy Vanners, they are named based upon their colors, performance in shows, lineage, or even something to do with fluffy feathers. I need to figure out an actual name theme for these guys. -_-

Miniatures, just recently started working with this breed, and decided on naming them after the Patel Family in India. Now, they may not have Indian names, but they will have Patel at the end of their names! :3

Arabians, I've been trying to go with Arabic names for this breed, because why not?!

Nice!

I've got about 50 Vanners right now. They're all Riding School money-makers (until I eventually sell them) but have good conformation, some nice colors, etc.

They're all named simple, single word names from English Romany, like Latcho (means good or safe), or Chai (which means girl).
