I would like to start off that I am new to rabbit breeding but done a lot of research on a little bit of everything, I also own a 2 year old dwarf mix rabbit who is fairly small I had him since he was 4 weeks (the mother regected them) this is coming from another owner. About 8 months ago (October) I found out about the Flemish Giant and I wanted one lol lucky for me my boyfriend use to own farm animals and had a chicken coop that we could use but I live on a island surrounded by water so finding the worlds biggest rabbit was not easy. But i eventually came across some but they where mix but still a good size and 2 hours later we got there, the man raised Flemish giants as meat rabbits but had other breeds I couldn't get a good look because it was dark in the litter they where selling there was whites/browns/and 2 greyish brownish Color ones and I obviously picked one of them and at first it was a pet but my boyfriend wanted a female and breed them but the lady didn't know the gender of mine at the time he was 6 weeks old we paid $35 for him and they sold us a light grey Vienna 6 month old doe. (He didn't want to part with her and said they are from the mainland) his wife convinced otherwise and we got her for $40, she also had a brownish top coat in October and it shed pretty fast not sure if she will have it again this fall. (They got her younger and had outside hutches).
Fast forward time we eventually got a litter on April 2nd 2017 of 10 but we had 2 runts that passed a week later😔
so I have a fare bit of spare time currently and been doing a lot of research on the breed it's self and then comparing my Flemish giants also color is the biggest factor I was given little information on the doe but I knew my bucks father was a pure Checkerd giant which I seen and was pretty large (also imported).
So the main point of this post is to put some answers on my rabbits color genetics/breeds. Like I said I have spare time and considering that I am a rabbit owner rookie I only recently found out that my doe is a light grey Vienna which from my knowledge is rare since she is part Flemish Giant and I found my buck to be a Chestnut agouti. Which I also assume is a uncommon rabbit color. We also decided to expand and start a hobby farm, After our litter was born and I found out the genders at 3 weeks 2 girls and 6 boys and I was still right up to 8 weeks just luck I guess since I came across two experience rabbit breeders who couldn't tell me the gender at 5 weeks and 6 weeks🙄 And this leads to where I recently purchased another Flemish Giant mix he was born April 5th, 3 days younger then our litter the lady we go him off said the doe was a pure Flemish Giant (white) and the father was a pure D'argent (black) the offsprings where steel grey/black. So I got steel grey male I name storm but... he is SMALLER then our litter of Flemish mixes even our smallest was bigger😒 But $45 later (she totally scammed me there) She asked how much we are selling ours and I said $50.. she later posted them for $40.
But months of looking I think I found pure Flemish Giants 4 hour drive but the photo of the parents look promising, but I can't get one till the end of June.
On the other side below is my Flemish Giant mixes and there little bio's, just curious to see what other options about what breed they really are.
Patches (8 month buck) 1 foot 1/2. 4 1/2 inch ears
Sept.5th 2016
Chesnut Agouti
I seen his parents but his mother had the same markings as miss bunny
Doe: sandy vienna ( Flemish x possible New Zealand x possible Dutch)
Buck: pure checkerd giant
Miss Bunny 2 feet 8inch ears
Light grey Vienna
1 year 1/2
Flemish x possible New Zealand x possible Dutch
*dont know parents
So why the possible? Research lead me to think Miss Bunny parent where pure light grey Flemish Giant and pure white New Zealand but the lady I got storm off of said she looks to be half Dutch which is a small rabbit and Miss bunny measured 2 feet. So I am starting to think that it could be a pure Flemish Giant crossed with a New Zealand x Dutch because they seem closer in sizer I also think that goes with Patches doe as well since she is similar, but then again they could more mix but pure Flemish Giants measure at 2 1/2 feet and Miss bunny isn't to far from that. Any thoughts?
And we got pretty colourful group of Flemish mixes of different sizes including Vienna and ended up keeping most of the litter besides 1 female and 2 males.
8 weeks (going on 9) we measured our 3 biggest males at 1 foot and 4 inch ears. (2 Vienna and 1 solid)
Our smallest male was 10 inches 3 1/2 inch ears (solid) and our female was 12 inches 4 inch ears (Vienna)
And our very smallest from another breeder was 7 inches and 3 inch ears (steel grey)
Names:
Daisy (sandy or fawn mix Vienna color)
Rusty (Sandy color?)
Storm (steel grey I am assuming)
Dusty (grey or blue Vienna)
Pepper (black mix Vienna)
Coco (fawn mix?)
I know they are still young to show there true color just want to know what Colors that can be or if I'm right.
Also when I comes to selling I had disclaimers saying they are not going to get large because I guess the color throws it off since Flemish Giants only come in 7 solid Colors (which I had those solid mixes) they also go the markings of a Dutch a smaller breed. In 6 months we will eventually know if they out grow there parents or not!
So that being said below are a few photos to help out!
Also if anyone knows the best photo size for the board that would be great!
