[pistol] Received genetic results!!

So I finally got my boy, Ton, sent in for a white pattern panel!

Turns out I was (nearly) correct! He has one copy of overo, but also one copy of dominant white (W20 to be specific)!

I knew he had overo, but I figured he had tobiano as well (and some of you insisted he did). Turned out I was wrong!

Here are his results:

And here he is! He's so perty, I got lucky c:

Neat! Heterogeneous W20 usually causes white socks on the hind legs, and sometimes a blaze or other face markings. Combined with other white patterns, it usually has a boosting effect, meaning the white patterns will be larger and more prominent. That's probably why people thought tobiano was present. It looked like overo plus something else.

I thought he might have splash in there due to his eyes. Shawn is a Dark Bay Tobiano Overo Splash with 1 blue eye and 1 50/50 blue and brown.

I haven't done much studying on dominant white. So, I wouldn't have guessed it lol. I still can't get over how pretty he is.

Funny enough, it's been discovered that frame overo doesn't express much (if at all) unless it's boosted by another white pattern, which would make sense with the W20 boosting the patterning on him. Still a handsome man.

ETA: Also, if he's actually full Quarter Horse and not grade, then he couldn't have been tobiano. The tobiano gene doesn't exist in the Quarter Horse genotype. The more you learn :)

@Ulysess: Interesting!

@Sib: Aw, thank you!

@Vos: Didn't know that! As far as I know he's a QH/Paint, but they're basically the same thing (couldn't pick both lol). I was told his sire & dam are registered but he's not, however I have no idea what their names are. So yes, he's grade. :p

@Marigold: Yes! Thank you!

Well, the Paint Horse was created with Quarter Horses, Thoroughbreds, and grade horses (the grade stock is where tobiano came from), so they ARE very similar to QH.
