'Micro notes' on horses

#100747 Posted on 2017-04-12 05:53:46

Currently a lot of people use a horse's name to include a collection of symbols that serve as notes and reminders that make it easier to find the right horses in drop-down lists, or order them within divisions, or organise them in other ways. For example, a horse called Fred, whose owner uses the brand ~T~ might have their actual name set as "~T~ s.sj.62 Fred (Ee)", which indicates to the owner that Fred is a stallion, in show jumping, has a conformation of 62, and has the Ee gene. Often these notes are only useful to the owner, and depending on the abbreviations used maybe even understandable only to them, so there's no real need for anyone else to see them, and the horse's name would be a lot cleaner if these notes could be placed elsewhere.

My suggestion is to get a tiny section for notes which would be prefixed to the horse's name in places like drop down lists and divisions, but would not display anywhere else, such as the hall of fame, show results, horse search, etc. Maybe it could only be visible to the owner as well? We could also get a type of division ordering that ordered horses by the micro-notes alphabetically, so you could still use it to do things like group all your stallions together. These micro-notes could have something like a 20 character limit to keep them small.

Using the above example, Fred's owner could set his name as "~T~ Fred" and his micro-notes as something like "s | sj | 62 | Ee". Anyone seeing him in show results, hall of fame, horse search, etc, would just see him listed as "~T~ Fred". The horse's page would also show his name as just "~T~ Fred", with the micro-notes listed somewhere else on the page. Maybe with the private notes? However, when the owner sees this horse in drop-down lists it would display as "[s | sj | 62 | Ee] ~T~ Fred". In divisions, instead of seeing:
N1 ~T~ Fred
it would display as:
N1 [s | sj | 62 | Ee] ~T~ Fred
or similar. Maybe just the owner would see the divisions like that? Or everyone? I'm not sure yet.

This is just a little idea that doesn't provide a lot of organisational ability that we don't already have, but it just implements it in a neater way, and may also open up this sort of organisation to those who are unwilling to compromise their horses names with symbols and notes. Please let me know what you think, or suggest changes or alternatives if you think there's a better way this could work. :)

I really like the idea of horses' names looking cleaner. I just wonder how many people would actually use it. I put two stars in front of my horses' names to make them easier to find in the places you're suggesting the notes not be visible, so I probably wouldn't, but that certainly doesn't mean no one else would.

What are the places you're referring to? If you're talking about something like an owner brand then that would still be best placed in the horse's name. Could you clarify?

this would be amazing!
i'm just picturing how much cleaner future pedigrees could look without all the assorted symbols in the ancestor's names ♥

This would be -uh maze ing-. Then I could give my horses real names and not a bunch of 'code' that only I understand.

@Ulysses, the Hall of Fame lists and the lists of horses entered in a show. I try really hard not to enter two of my horses in the same show so I like being able to quickly check who's in a show. It's a lot faster to just scan for a symbol than to read each name. I don't think of it as a brand because I delete it when I sell a horse, plus I have a different brand I use on foals I breed, but I guess it basically is.

I hate having to put all the extra info on my horses names, it looks so messy! But i kinda have to cause otherwise it's impossible for me to match up my hundreds of horses :(

Fabulous idea!
