pigeonbusiness's Horses
← View All HorsesThis is where our broodmares and our unweaned foals and mares are kept. Broodmares are our performance mares over fifteen who have been retired from active competition to have babies. They are still lightly used in our school program to keep them in shape. Broodmares are kept here wether they are pregnant or nursing or not to act as support for the other mares in the pasture. Our foals spend the first year of their lives on pasture with their mothers and other mares and foals. This allows the foals to develop both physically, mentally and socially. Mares do co-parent and if we have a mare that is a poor mother, our other mares will pick up the slack. The same goes for mares that are nervous or overprotective of their foals. The other mares will often put them in their place. Foals are officially weaned at one year of age, but most mares have already warned their foals before this point. This has proven to be a very smooth, low stress process as by this time, mares and foals have become accustomed to being separated regularly for riding, training, farrier etc.
