Two Green OTTBs.....My life just got busy

#150467 Posted on 2018-02-14 20:49:23

Hey guys!

So...........as the title suggests, my family and I now own 2 pretty green off the track thoroughbreds! I am super excited to work with these two pretty boys as this is the first time I am training two horses at once! I will try to keep you updated on their progress if you would like! Before I get into the details and stuff, I will just give a little background info on me and the two boys.

ME:
Me? I am really nothing special. I am 14 years old (I'll be 15 in August) and I am a freshman in high school. I am a Hunter/Jumper rider, and am trying to figure out if I want to go down the Hunter path, Jumper path, Eventing path, or Cross Country path. I have been riding since I was 9 (so 5 years) which really is NOT something to brag about as there are a lot of people who have been riding much longer than I have. I know that some people are going to think, "you are only 14, how are you going to train two horses?" Honestly, I don't know XD. I just know that I have an awesome support system helping me through giving me lots of confidence that I am going to need with these two boys.

QUINTON (Q for short):
Quinton - 5 year old 16.3hh Dapple Grey OTTB Gelding
Back in September of 2017, I was looking online for OTTBs that needed rehoming. I came across Q (then he still had his race name of "Jack") on Canter USA listed on the Canter Chicago site. I fell in love with his color and his personality, even though I had never met him. However, I was not very confident in myself and my ability to train a horse, so I didn't push to adopt him very hard. I did bring him up on a quite a few occasions and showed him to my trainer. BUT then on November 17, 2017, we were heading to the barn to grab some things, and there he was....standing in the round pen. I was so surprised/excited and nervous at the same time because I was not sure if I was ready to train a horse. So, now, in February of 2018 in the coldest winter Wisconsin has had in a heck of a long time, we have had Q for nearly 3 months and I could not be happier with him and his training so far! He has been a dream so far.

SHILOH:
Shiloh - 4 year old 17.1hh Dark Brown/Bay OTTB Gelding
The newest boy! About a month ago (end of December or early January), the same person who we adopted Q from contacted us and said that they had another thoroughbred that was ready to go to a new home. She said that this horse was her daughter's personal racer that had not been doing too well in his racing career. We really trusted her, and since she was willing to take him back in case he did not like it up here or we didn't work out, we decided to give it a go. So, yesterday, Shiloh (race name "Sid" that we changed to Shiloh) arrived in good ole Wisconny and has been settling nicely. I am going to give him a week to two weeks to settle in and I am only going to do basic ground work/manners for a few weeks. I am super excited to see where we head together!

Well yeah, there ya go! There is a little introduction to me and the boys. Let me know if you have any questions, whether it be about me or either of the boys!

All I can say is good luck!!! XD we've had a handful of OTTBs pass through here, and our most recent one is a 17hh cutie called oscar - a super cuddly boy on the ground, but a real handful under the saddle - he'd raced almost daily for two years before he came to us, and ughhhhh he's a real pain to rebreak but we're getting there!!

@Ride4Life - Thank you! Ahhh yes, the thoroughbred spunk XD They seem to never mentally age past 6 or 7 and are always so rambunctious! I will definitely try to keep you updated on their progress!

@Midnight Outlaw - Thank you, too! I hope your training goes well as well! And I will most definitely need the luck!
