Flaxen Grey arabians

#94246 Posted on 2017-02-20 06:53:06

I accidently bred a flaxen grey Arabian, she's greyed out and is absolutely gorgeous, her mane and tail stayed flaxen. I've been trying to breed more flaxen greys so even when when have greys they're still gorgeous after they've greyed out but I've had no luck. Anyone know how to do it? What genes I need to look for to guarantee or at least have a very good chance at getting flaxen grey foals?

flaxen only shows on chestnut, so you'll need a horse with a chestnut base (ee/aa, ee/Aa, or ee/AA), who has two flaxen genes (ff), and who has one or two greying genes (Gg or GG).

All possible combinations that will result in a greyed flaxen:
ee aa GG ff
ee Aa GG ff
ee AA GG ff
ee aa Gg ff
ee Aa Gg ff
ee AA Gg ff

The flaxen gene is ff.
ff = flaxen
Ff = flaxen carrier
FF = doesn't have the gene at all

Grey is GG/Gg
GG = grey will pass on the gene to all offspring
Gg = grey has a chance of passing on the gene
gg = doesn't have the grey gene

Flaxen only shows on chestnut horses so your grey must have been chestnut orginially. I believe black and bay horses can carrier flaxen but it will not show (someone please correct me if I'm wrong).

I don't know anything about genetics, but do you have a link to the horse? She sounds really pretty. ♥☆

If you want flaxen, both parents must have at least one f-gene each (Ff or ff). They both must also be either Ee or ee. Chestnut (ee) and flaxen (ff) are recessive, that means it require two copies of the same gene to be visible.
In addition, at least one parent must be Gg or GG to get the grey. Grey is dominant and therefore different from chestnut and flaxen, it will be visible with only one copy of the grey-gene (Gg).

Non-chestnut bases (Ee or EE) can offcourse be genetically flaxen (ff) or carry flaxen (Ff), but it will not be visible.

Thank you so much for the info :)
Can I ask what the AA etc is for? I know ee is chestnut, ff is flaxen, but what's AA?

In answer to pony stars, here is Honeycloud, if you want to see the different between her and a regular greyed out Arabian, get up two tabs, one of Honeycloud and one of a regular grey to see the difference even better, she really is lovely, I think so anyway haha

Actually I'm going to see if I can put her image and another greys image on this post, i've never done it before do Honeycloud link is above anyway haha

AA stands for agouti.
AA is bay.
Aa is bay.
aa is black.
For it to be visible the horse must also be EE or Ee, non-chestnut. Agouti doesn't show on ee (chestnut) bases, so it's not something you have to keep in mind when breeding flaxen grey.

And thank you cat for the link :)

I'll still breed for flaxen greys, id like my greys to have beautiful base coats, it'll just be dissapointing when the glitch is fixed and the flaxen no longer shows once they've greyed out haha
